Last year, roughly one person of color was shot each day by police, many of whom later justified their actions by claiming they had seen the flash of a gun — even in cases where the victims turned out to be unarmed.
In 2012, officers from the Cleveland Police Department fired 137 shots at Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, killing them in their car, on the belief they were armed and had fired a gun at them. It simply wasn’t true. They were unarmed.
That same year, the NYPD shot and killed 18-year-old Ramarley Graham in his own home, claiming they thought he had a gun. Again, he didn’t.
Amazingly, though, two white supremacists in rural Texas — suspects in a series of break-ins — took police on a dangerous car chase at 3 a.m. and fired multiple shotgun blasts at police in the process — hitting two different police cars with the shots.
Please allow me to rephrase this.
Two actually armed white supremacists suspected of actual crimes took police on an actual car chase in which the Neo-Nazis actually fired a shotgun at police multiple times and actually struck police cars with actual bullets shattering their actual windshield in the process.
But, unlike the actually unarmed Timothy Russell, Malissa Williams, Ramarley Graham, Amadou Diallo, Cedrick Chatman, or Kendrec McDade, police somehow found a way to apprehend the white supremacists without killing them. That’s a revelation. How did they do such a thing? How were they able to use such amazing restraint in the face of an actual threat when suchrestraint so frequently seems in short supply with black folk?
