Visa gift card registration question?

I had purchased a visa gift card about a week ago and registered it online without a problem. Then a day ago I bought another one and tried registering it online with the same name and address again and it wouldn't accept it. It kept saying that there was an error and please contact visa. I cleared all cookies, active log-ins, cash etc in my browser but it didn't make any difference. I then tried using different name address and phone number combos until I got one to work.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Does Visa have some kind of policy about not allowing more than one registration to the same individual? Are there better cards to use that don't have these problems, like Mastercard or AmEx?

I can't imagine that it would be a problem because what if someone were to receive a bunch of gift cards for their birthday or something and want to register them all? I really don't want to have to contact Visa because I am afraid they'll ask me for social security numbers or something. At the same time I want to make a few purchases online but am afraid to invest a bunch of money in gift cards only to find that I can't register them with the same name/address. I've run onto trouble with orders before where the address I register the card with and the shipping address are different, which is why I want to have all cards registered with the same info.....Help!

You should get a visa gift card that does not require registration. It would make that problem instantly disappear. The Vanilla Visa gift card brand is what you should look for

Hope that helps

Interesting. I was under the impression that any of these cards require registration if you use them for shopping online. As I understand it, the only scenario where you don't need to register is if you actually go into a store and they are able to physically swipe the card. But I defer to you because the card I have is not the vanilla visa, its the gray visa gift card. On the vanilla visa page it doesn't say anything about registering the card or online shopping so I'm not sure what their policy is.

Have you actually used the vanilla visa online without having to register it?

One problem is that the vanilla visa has a maximim of $100 and unfortunately this isn't enough for what I want to buy. I'd need a bunch of them.

Here's an excerpt from a review blog of the vanilla visa giftcard found here: http://giftcardblogger.com/vanilla-visa-gift-card-explained/

"2. Can the Vanilla Visa Gift Card Be Used to Shop Online? The short answer is yes and no. Yes, because Vanilla Visa has information on their FAQs addressing the issue of using the card online. They do encourage card holders to use their mailing address when using the card online. They do not explicitly say that you cannot use the card online, but they do acknowledge that your personal information is not linked to the card. And that is where the problem lies. Since your personal information is not linked to the card, when the online merchant tries to verify the name and address you provide against the information on file with your gift card issuer (just like the do for credit cards), they are not able to match the information against your Vanilla Visa card, which leads to the card being rejected. I am not sure why Vanilla Visa will not come out and just tell their customers that. Some people buy these cards with the hope of using them online only to find out they cannot. That can be frustrating."

Try these:

These are Visa cards that are accepted worldwide with a maximum of 2 grand per card. You have to activate it for online/international use by registering it online. You can use any name you want, but you must use a real street and zip code somewhere. Keep this info too because if there is a problem with the order or anything, the company that issues the card will want this info from you. Walgreen's sells them too. Good Luck!

Awesome! Thanks FranJan :) The highest limit I've found in the supermarket style gift cards is $500 which isn't so good if you want to buy equipment online.
