Victoria police raided the Remedy Medicinals marijuana shop on Fisgard Street this morning.

Witnesses say officers arrived at the pot shop at 833 Fisgard St. before 7 a.m. and waited for staff to open the doors.

Five officers have been bringing in evidence bags and boxes and have covered the windows to prevent anyone from seeing inside.

Victoria police confirm the raid is linked to the 30 pounds of marijuana that was seized on a Helijet flight on Jan. 10. Three people were arrested but have been released.

The department said in a statement that "investigation into the unlicensed marijuana storefront continues and investigators have noted that Health Canada has not licensed this storefront for sales."

Victoria police said the search warrant "does not represent a change in our approach to marijuana storefronts."

On Jan. 17 and Jan. 10, Victoria police were called to the Helijet terminal on Dallas Road for reports of the smell of marijuana coming from luggage. On Jan. 10, the officers seized 30 pounds of marijuana and one person was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court on possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On Jan. 17, police seized cash that was headed for Baked Edibles after the store sold some of its cannabis products to a dispensary in Vancouver. No charges have been laid in that incident but the seizure underlined the marijuana industry's reliance on cash since banks will not allow business accounts.

The City of Victoria last year introduced regulations for medical marijuana businesses that include rules around closing times and marijuana consumption on site.

Last week, West Shore RCMP shut down Green Tree medical marijuana shop in Langford, a day after it opened. Langford Mayor Stew Young said he would not tolerate marijuana businesses in his municipality until federal regulations clear up the murky legal landscape.

A pot dispensary in Victoria is advertising discount medicinal marijuana on its sidewalk sandwich sign.

"All it means is that at certain hours of the day, they can come in and get their medication — edible or joint — for just a fraction cheaper," said Omar Manji, director of Remedy Medicinals in Victoria.

"We are trying to dispense relief to our patients," he said.

Manji doesn't believe the stores 'happy hour' special sends the wrong message and says it is actually a popular business practice in California and Vancouver.

The shop's website brands itself as 'Canada's premier medicinal marijuana dispensary' and even offers deals and prizes to users for mail orders.

"My slogan here is we dispense relief and happiness 420 hours a month," he said.

The City of Victoria has asked the sidewalk sign to be removed, not because of what it says but because it doesn't meet the city's sandwich board permit rules.

Manji said the sign will be back once he gets the proper permit.

Victoria police say their raid of a downtown cannabis dispensary this morning does not represent an organizational shift in their approach to pot shops.

VicPD officers executed a search warrant at Remedy Medicinals Dispensary on the 800-block of Fisgard Street this morning. Investigators aren't saying if anything was seized.

Three people were arrested and then released, but police say it's too early to say if criminal charges will be recommended.

Cst. Matt Rutherford says the investigation started following a complaint after 30 pounds of pot was found being shipped on a Helijet flight to Victoria on January 10.

"Specifically with this investigation and search warrant, it's in relation to that 30 pounds of marijuana that was being transported on a commercial aircraft. That's concerning to our department when a quantity of marijuana is being transported on a commercial aircraft, potentially putting the public, those passengers, and any crew or employees at risk."

Remedy Medicinals is one of 35 dispensaries currently operating in Victoria.
