Vegging under HPS?

im just about to step into hydros 400w myself (when i get the last of my hydro setup delivered if ever..) but i can tell you you will need a few fans or maybe an inline fan to keepthe temps under control because it will get hot under a 600w HPs light.

the only other issue i can think of is make sure you get the distance ebtwene plant tops an your light right to ensure you dont toast them or force them into having to stretch to much to get upto the lighting.

That will help you understand the safe lighting distance. fan wise il leave that to anyone whos got experince in 600w growing.

I used my 600w HPS for veg on my first grow and did not have any problems, but if you can invest in a t5 after your harvest you'll be happy if only for the energy savings and reduction in wear on that expensive HPS bulb. They are hotter than a t5, but you'll just need the same ventilation you'd have for flower anyway. With two 600w sealed XXXLs and a 6 in fan I can put my hand on the glass. For a 4x5 room I have the 6 in pulling air out of the top of the room (~8 ft ceiling) and blowing through the lights and out through the attic. At the bottom I have a 6" duct booster drawing cool air in from the rest of my house, this feeds right into the back of one of the oscillating fans. There are two desk sized oscillating fans angled upward about a foot and a half off the ground, one on each side of the room. With my house at 67 my temp reads 75 about 8 inches below my lights and my temps are safe all the way up to the glass. Happy growing!

I veg and flower under hps. I actually prefer it because I can keep the ladies closer without getting burned. I'm on a mover, so on average, the pants are 10-16" from the lamps with ample air flow. If you veg uder hps, it's worth rhe investment to go with a super hps for the added spectrum.

that should be fine, im using CFLS and there a farely low wattage, just getting the right spectrum is key plus the lumens output
