Vegging under HPS v. MH

Does anyone or has anyone vegged with a HPS bulb?

So I have always subscribed to the common place belief that it is better to veg under a Metal Halide bulb then a High Pressure Sodium...

But recently, due to space and cycle timing, I was forced to veg plants under an HPS. I was BLOWN AWAY by the results!!!! First off, I was always told it would make them stretch, but they didn't grow taller at all, only wider. Their stalks were as round as my thumb when the were about 12" tall, and they seem to have much sturdier branches.

It's just made me think...

Anyone else ever tried this?

I've done it before with 400 hps.. It worked fine.. I did not get the thickness you are talking about but then again I grew Strawberry haze from green house and it just stretched and stretched but it was a sativa. i'm assuming you growing an indica dominent strain. I really only did it to get them to veg a lil faster which they did and threw in the flowering room after only 4 weeks from seed. But I'm sure the strains act different when given that much intense light so early. IMO I'd only do to get them to go flower a little early because running HID for 18hrs is killer not only on you elc bill but on managing the heat as well.

Imo, most people have an overkill veg light anyway. You're only lighting teensy tiny little plants for the first few weeks. Just cram them all together under fluorescent.

In order to veg plants for a 1000W flowering room, you only need about 200W of veg (six T-8 tubes would do it for cheap too).
