Vegetative period for indoor setup

I have 7ft (2.1m) ceilings in a 200 cubic ft (5.7 cubic meter) space. Assume I wish to keep 16 inches (40cm) from my 430W Son Agro bulb to the top of my growth. My soil is (roughly) the same distance off the floor.

All of a sudden I have 4ft (120cm) of effective vertical grow space (I've factored in the vent, water and size of light system but left it off to make the math one dimensional: vertical.

Assume I've properly controlled the growing conditions.

So, allow me to work backward from at most a 4ft (120cm) plant at harvest. Let me amend that to 3.5ft (105cm) plants. How long should I pursue the vegetative phase before switching over to the flowering phase?

Keep them at 12 -18". They will likely double or triple in height, it's really about height and not time.

If you feel you want to veg more just tie down the main colas to maintain 12-18"

good idea about tying down the cola. I knew about the height doubling and all but thats a good idea to keep in mind.

Keep in mind that the double or tripling of size is only a guideline that works well for most hybrids. The closer you are to pure indica or pure sativa the less true the guideline is.

What strain are you growing?

The were right at 12" and I was suprised they grew so tall. I think 1 of them is sativa dom as it out grew all the others and is no where near finishing as the others could turn any time.

unknown hybrid strain. believed to be lemon g or lemon kush. idk i need to lower closet temps

Yeah, temps are a bitch and can be really deceiving. One summer after my grow area had been taken down, I had the choice between flowering out a clone in my closet, or just letting her die. I decided that any growing was better than not. The clone was Kalichakra from Mandalay Seeds, and I had grown it for several runs.

So I put the clone in my closet, under a 400w light. We didn't have central air or anything so I just kept a box fan blowing on the plant during day light hours. The plant grew perfectly. Great fan leaves, no sing of heat stress, buds everywhere. Some of the buds were huge too! My average temp was 97 degrees, sometimes peaking at 101.

When I finally chopped this big beast down she yielded two mason jars worth of bud that weighed a total of 21 grams. Nothing like grinding up a big nug to get enough for two bowls.

Potency and taste didn't seem to effected though.

everything you said is exactly my setup to the t. boxfan and all. hope i get the same results. thx for the inspiration.

People, this is SirTitianium, the OP. Thanks so much for all your replies and the good information.

I miscalculated the square footage. It is 300 ft square, not 200. The space is full of oblique angles making it hard to measure (and ventilate). I wanted to ask Bonzi Lighthouse about tying down the colas. Is that not a variant of bonsai technique and wouldn't that be a shock that would change the end product? I'm extrapolating from the fact that it effectively dwarfs the plant. I'm not worried about quantity, so allow me to ask about quality. If I had one pure Sativa (Haze perhaps) tied down and another growing free, would the final products' pharmacology each be the same? Excuse me for using the word pharmacology, but these are medicinal so I have added concerns. My moniker, SirTitanium refers to the primary component of my lumbosacral vertebral column (L5/S1) after a Learjet crashed on take-off.

Since you bring up temp and ventilation, allow me to hijack my own thread. If I brought in air through a small, 5000 BTU air conditioner and vented it out with a pair of 135mm compute fans, would this approximate a decent design for such a small setup? I'm having a tough time finding how to convert fan sizes into cubic feet per minute moved. Speaking of moving air, I am going to use a Vornado Compact Fan to strengthen the stems during their vegetative phase. These fans are silent, oscillate and are powerful for their tiny size. My question to y'all is should I turn it off when I switch to flowering (at 12" to 18") and give them some atmospheric peace?.

OK, to sum up:

1) They will double to triple in height.
2) 1.0 to 1.5ft is a good target height for switching over given my dimensions and don't sweat the timing.
3) Consider tying down the colas (Bonzi Lighthouse please respond - see above).
4) Focus on evacuating stale air out of room: please comment on my final paragraph above (re airflow) and tell me if I'm paying too much attention.

Again, thanks to all for taking your valuable time to reply.
