untangling roots

just thought I'd throw this out there.... since as i've been reading and learning (as Im a Noob kind of , myself) ...I havent seen much info on this .... but Im encountering it happening ...and Ive learned something small ....but maybe helpful to someone else out there....

if you have multiple plants in DWC...and they start to get big enough to start haveing roots get tangled......(this might work when removing males too ...I havent encountered THAt yet) I have found ....that untangling them UNDERWATER.... is 10 times easier .... than trying to untangle them while holding them out of water .

I have found a technique of swooshing the roots slowly towards then away each other(but without tension)( and I mean swooshing over and over again .....sometimes 5 times...sometimes maybe 15 times)...and doing this underwater....can slowly untangle them, with minimal root breakage, and I've even untangled some pretty tangled ones (it just took longer to accomplish.

havn't run into this problem yet, but that sounds like a good way of going about it, underwater would make sense.

what has been your reasoning for needing to untangle roots out of curiosity if it wasn't a male?
 
I started a bunch of diff strains from seed at the same time.... 4 per bin is what they're in now... and the differences (mostly from sativa to indicas.... but also a couple of runts).... well, cause they've been growing so differently ...I've had to shuffle them around to keep the tallest ones from growing from the center into the light...

That and I had to remove some males that got intertwined with their neighbors.

one of them recently took me about 10 minutes to untangle ...but it was successful and only broke like 3% of the roots... pretty good imo...
 
I had the same thing happen to me,I just untangled what I could and cut the rest,6 weeks into flower now and no root problems yet.just on 1 that I cut a little to short, 1 that was a runt anyway but its flowering a few weeks behind but that will be fine.I use h2o2 when adding water or nutes and so far its going good,this is my first indoor hydro grow and my 2nd indoor grow and I have learned alot along the way.
 
I had to root out some males a few weeks ago. The roots were unimaginably tangled. If this happens to you, don't stress and have a smoke first :)_ , as you are going to need some patience for the next part. A technique i found invaluable was to take 4-5 roots at the side of the pot and pull them out gently from the rest of the tangled root mass preferably just above the water level so they can be dipped in the drink while you complete your task. Individually they don't have the tensile strength, but any more than 5-10 at a time can cause roots to knot and snap Continue in this way until you have all 1000+ roots done. I'll be surprised if your plants even noticed what happened. Mine didn't! ** Good luck **
 
Haven't needed to do this, but it is a good idea.
Also giving the roots a lil hair cut won't hurt either. As long as there's enough mass left to grab some water.
 
One up on all ya'll...............

My last 2 grows, when I chopped my males around week 2 of bloom, I left their stumps covered in the net pots AND their entire root system together, entangled and living with the female(s) in bloom until harvest !!!!!
Check the C99 sig for pics and shit !!
Just because you/we chop them doesn't mean they die.
As long as there's enough dissolved oxygen and some food, the roots and stump will thrive.

NO ODORS, BACTERIA, FUNGUS, INSTABILITY WITH PH / PPM / TEMPS OR ROOT DECOMPOSITON AT ALL IN EITHER GROWS !!!

If need be, I'll do it again with my current grow too.

I believe ya. It's a plant just like a tree. The only reason it's a seasonal plant is because the roots can't handle the cold weather.
shit if you woulda kept that stump goin long enough I'm sure some leaves would have popped out sooner or later.

My thoughts too, PW !
If I had the space to test it out, I would have. lol
I know it would have regenerated with enough time.
Prob was they were males !
 
I've since encountered issues with airstones being eaten up by root balls and in the end i figured fuck it and jut ripped the buggers out, plant didn't seem to care one bit.
 
Triple T, I too noticed on my 1st DWC that the stand alone large column-like air stones (see pic) break down after a while.
They react to the nutes and plants, and start "decomposing" in a sense.

When I switched to Wal Fart 14 inch BLUE air stone bars, I have had no probs.
After harvest, I soak them in hot water and peroxide and scrub them with a hard bristle brush.
Replace and regrow ! lol
 
That sounds bad! I just maen that the roots grow around the airstone so when i pull the plant up there's just an airline dissapearing into the roots, i just yank real hard and end up with 1 airstone and 1 handful or roots :D i've been using the same airstones since i started a year odd back. Barely give off a bubble but the plants still grow.
 
Soak'em in hot water and peroxide, then let them sit for a few hours or a day and scrub clean.
Need more bubbles Triple T ! lol
 
That's what everyone sais, along with the mulsitude of other things i don't adhere to, but i seem to grow just lovely cannabis :) maybe i'm just lucky and it'll all go south at some ppoint :D

I don't exactly get swayed by popular opinion either.

If it ain't broke.................
