I just saw a real nice 8 by 8 room, 12 plants, covered by one Magnum XXXL 8" Air-cooled Reflector with a nice 1k MH bulb. They were in veg stage but it seemed to be doing more than enough to keep me jealous the entire time I was there...
plus you will save money if you only have to use one light....

A second medium size reflector means you would be using a second 1000w light, correct? No matter what, a second light is better than one larger reflector alone. Plus, you don't have the plant numbers to quantify using a hood the size of a Raptor or Ocho. "Big" hoods distribute light on a horizontal axis. With 8 plants your best bet is keep 4 plants, 2ft-3ft tall each, under a 1000w. The hood you need is one that will penetrate deep and distribute light on a vertical axis. The Cool Sun or Blockbuster from Sunlight Supply are nice and so are the Radiant 8s from Hydrofarm.
This makes sense although reading about vertical growing sounds very promising.
