Say if you used a pretty deep and wide tray..Is this feasible??

Sure, just avoid doing it with seed. Pulling males becomes problematic. Leaving dead roots weaved in with living roots isn't a good option. Pulling out the living roots with the dead roots isn't a good option. So most people just concede that multiple pots is the best option.
