That vote was suspect. Hawaii was being administered as a territory by the USA since the USA "annexed it" * and the vote was should Hawaii become a state, yes or no? What wasn't allowed was another option, "should Hawaii return to independence" .

So the vote amounted to asking a field hand slave if he wanted to stop picking cotton and work in the big house. No mention of being freed though.


*annexed = a euphemism for imperialistic seizure, akin to rape
