Trimming

I have seen and heard alot of people saying that the first few nodes aren't going to put out any bud at all, that only from the fourth one up will the bud grow. is this true? and if so, should i clip the lower growth off to make the plants use that energy for bud production? any advice will be much appreciated

Well this is not 100% true since my bottom nodes stretched a bit sideways and are producing a decent amount of bud, imo dont try any trimming at all unless u have like 20 plants to experiment and compare..

ok cool. I dont have that many so i wont try anything. i am experimenting with topping some of the plants, just so see the difference in results. I am needing to keep them mora short and thick versus tall, due to room size. is topping the best way to keep them from getting tall and skinny? and does that affect the amount of bud it will produce?

i usually trim the bottom 2-3 branches off, theyre usually a lot smaller than the others. depends on the individual plant tho, some i do some i dont, sometimes ill leave em on and trim them off during flowering for sampling purposes. pretty much always trim the first set of branches off tho, they usually dont amount to much by harvest time anyway.

Well i m not that experienced but i tried topping on my current grow.. u could check the results on my grow journal, topping is the way to go, and i m currently experimenting on supercropping on another fem plant i got.. if everything goes right i m gonna post photos..

heres pics of one i got going now,
this one was a bit too stretchy for my liking and didnt feel like topping it so just did a bit of supercropping/LST.

You will get bud on your smaller branches bit it will be very small. We call them popcorn nugs.

Search button, there are way better guides already written than what someone can tell you here, the benefits are increased yield, and it can utilize space better.

first time growers should not attempt any advanced growing techniques IMHO. Just get a bit of experience with the basics is going to do more for you than all the advanced stuff combined. Only go advanced after you have the basics down pat.

here is what I do, I cut off almost the whole bottom half of the plant clean of all stems, leaves, shoots. Normally I do this the day i switch to flowering. The reason is becasue I am using a 600 W HPS in cool tube and the light does not penetrate all the way through the leaf canopy ending up in fluff bud on the lower branches. This takes away from my main cola. I like a super solid huge main cola, makes it easy to harvest and has the most weight.

So if Im using a 2 ft 4 bulb t5HO light, then i should really cut the lower branches off huh? the lower growth is still growing, but i can definitely see the top doing way better. Im just over one week into flowering, no sign of bud yet. just now getting the little pistil shoots, hopefully no males :/

Either trim the bottom branches off, or get even more lights around the bottom.
