trimming larger leaves for more light?

Should I trim a few of the larger leaves so that the lower bud sights will get more light?

I am in week 4 of flowering and the plant had suffered a little heat stress earlier on causing it to grow very large broad leaves.

Is there any precations or things that I should look out for if I trim off 3 or 4 of the larger leaves?

this is arguable.....some say absolutely do not cut any fan leaves off because they supply the plant with energy and what not and others do some pruning.
personally when my plant nears the middle/ending of the flowering cycle i start trimming here and there when i see a bud being blocked completely...

i guess the argument would be whether the plants grow faster from the photosynthesis of the fan leaves or if the buds would benefit more from direct light

don't trim the leaves - it's that simple. if you want more light to the lower bud sites, then buy a CFL and put them near the lower sites. there's more than one way to solve the problem. everyone wants to resort to cutting the damn fan leaves when they could simply put more light there.

I tried this on my last grow and I got the biggest harvest to date. I pulled off a lot of leaf too. Anything that didn't have sugar got yanked.... very nice results. 8 week indy-sat hybrid, pulled leaves after the stretch at 5 weeks.

I'm one of those that says NO!;-)

Very large broad leaves will convert a lot of light into a lot of energy.

Very small leaves will convert very lttle light into less energy.

Cutting off a large energy producer, because it's in the way of a small energy producer just doesn't make sense, does it?

but does that give more bud growth than direct light to the buds? i would say its as cut and dry as "dont cut fan leaves" i think theres a line between pruning to get more light and choppin off all the leaves....

i mean is it proven that if you keep the bigger leaves your plant will be healthier? if there is i would love to see it

I would say no as well. Tuck them away or pull them in a different direction so you can still obtain the energy and your bud site will get light.

this is not helpful to the debate....you gave no reason as to why you shouldn't cut fan leaves this point is arguable dude its not as simple as that

Thanks folks I think I will let them stay for now, I had already trimmed on eor two mangled ones from heat stress.

But I think it is worth thinking about trimming late into flowering when most of the energy comes from and goes to the bud.

Doesn't new growth and leaves have more active photosynthisis?

Rule of thumb that I have always followed is if it isn't dead, or dieing to not cut it. The bud site will push through to get to the light eventually. If it doesn't not you can always tie off the branch to be held to the side of the fan leaf. A plant growing out in the wild, does not just shed leaves to aquire more light, it simply streches a bit further.
