trimming dreadlocks?

Howdy.
I have several of Nirvana's Ice that are getting near harvest time. I was out looking at them this morning and I noticed that all the colas are looking like dreadlocks rather than compact buds. Although they are quite large, there is no compact 'center' to them.
My question is this: How does one properly trimm a dreadlocked bud as opposed to a compact bud?
Confused in California.

I think you might be referring to fox tails? (not my picture below)

They usually have lower leaf to bud ratio's.

Foxtails / dreadlocks, yes I guess foxtails is the prefered term. I guess I just cut off the fan leaves and leave it like that???? First time dealig with it is why I ask.

My pure power plant from nirvana this year is a super sativa-dom pheno...

All foxtail. It's a PITA to trim, but the bud is top notch. Takes a lot longer to trim than typical dense colas. I go in there and cut off all of the baby leaves that are coming outta the foxtials

Thanks for the input. I'll muddle thru I guess.

On a side note: I grew Nirvanas PPP for several years but had no foxtailing. Maybe the pheno or high temps causing it in yours. It was a very nice commercial strain however. Good quantity and good quality, my people where happy with it.
