i have a few two and a half foot plants in two gallon pots that are root bound. i am about to transplant them into 6 gal pots and then in a couple of days switch to 12/12 for flower what i was wondering is should i loosen or scratch up the base and sides of the root ball to free the roots up a bit or just drop the bundle of tied up roots straight into the bigger pots thanks heaps for any replies

Yes, it's a good idea to score the roots before transplant. Make 4 or so cuts about 1/2" deep from top to bottom and make an X on the very bottom.

Root growth really slows or stops in flower, so I'd wait a bit longer before 12/12. Give the roots time to get into the new soil. If you haven't, I'd add some lime to the new soil and avoid pH problems and have plently of cal/mag for flower. 1tbl/gallon of mix.
