Transplanting from Soil to Hydroponics!

Hello,

How would I go about transplanting 1, 1 month old seedling and 3, 2 week old seedlings from the cup full of soil they are currently in to a hydroponic setup I ordered and should be receiving soon? How can I minimize putting the plant into shock? Is it too late to transplant them? Should I just grow them with the soil they are in and start the next planting time with the hydro? They are in a plastic "party" cup...Was thinking of transplanting them into a bigger pot too...

Well, you could keep them in their soil that they're already in and transplant into a larger container using soiless medium like FoxFarm

Alright, so yesterday I received my hydro kit. I was wondering if I should let my seedlings grow in the soil or transplant them to the hydro? If I were to transplant them to hydro, how would I do it without killing the plant?

My seedlings are 1 month old and they still have 4 leaves...I think they are stunted. I recently change my lighting from CFL's to 2 blue LED bulbs the past 3-4 days and transplanted them to a larger pot....

yes, i have a similar situation and i would like any input someone could give.

mine are about 2 weeks old and are in 4" pots, im going to be transplanting to a larger pot soon, but if i could, i would like to put them in the system i just bought.

the plants are completely healthy, and have 4 true leaves each.

Yes, I tried it and it went well. Gently remove the plant and wash off the roots with tap water from the sink till there isn't any dirt left and put it in the rockwool cube

xsil3nt-

thanks for the info! mine are having some ph issues in the soil and im ready to move them into my hydro system. i used ceramic pots for these sprouts and i think they dry out the soil too fast.

just out of curioustly - what nutes are you using with your system. all over this forum ive read FoxFarm but a local hydro guy swears by Advanced Nutrients.

just wondering what you are using since you grow is similar to mine. for the seedlings im transplanting they are 2 weeks old but have 4 leaves also.

I use Dyna-gro and Dyno-Boom nutrients for my 6 plant hydroponic system. Very good items and they cost way cheaper than the other companies

xsil3nt-

i started my plants on the Advanced Nutrients line, ill let you know how that goes. I hav VitaBoost Pro, and Iguana Juice.

pH- i have been having some mega pH issues. Ill put it in the resovoir at 5.8/5.9 and then a matter of hours later its into the 4's.

there is still residual dirt on some of the roots- not masses of mud, but ive been changins the resovoir every other day because sediment gets washed off. to your knowledge, could that be the cause of my pH drop?

i suppose i could wash them off a little more, im afraid of tearing any roots tho

When I put my plants into the rockwool cube, they had a little dirt and I doubt it will cause a change in pH. Try to use some pH up or a sprinkle of Baking soda. I have the opposite problem, my pH always rises so I added more nutes and some fish tank balance which has pH buffers to keep the pH at a constant range and I haven't had a problem with pH since!

"Tetra Easy Balance"

Nice product that keeps the pH at a constant range suitable for fish and plant growth. Costs like $4 for a decent size bottle. I got my bottle from Walmart fish supplies section.

im def going to pick up some of that Tetra easy balance.

its been 2 full days in the aero, 2 of my seedlings kind of look a little wilty. right now im checking the pH about every hour, im pretty sure i just need to find a consistent balance and things will turn around.

what kind of hydro kit do u hve and how much was it? ive been wanting to buy one but dont know which one is perfect for me

i am just using the Aerogarden.

its a simple and easy 3 plant set up. its areoponics which means theres no growing medium like hydroponics, same stuff really.

the aerogarden goes for about $150. theres a million posts on what do do.

its a complete kit with pump, lights, resovoir, etc.

theres a copule other things you will need like nutes, seeds, etc.

i dont know what systems others on this thread are using.

I've done this before (I nearly regret it, but it works). You need to be very careful throughout the whole process though. Especially with the plants. Start by taking them out of their pot, and removing the big clumps of un-rooted dirt. Just run your hand over it. Then, when it gets to the point where the dirts too little to get off by hand, run it under gentle water and it will remove the rest. But in the future, if you start with soil, end with it. Its still always a nice smoke! Just more time intensive!

What are your working conditions? Maybe I can help you out with this stuntation.

drugged-

not sure which you mean by working conditions.

im using an aerogarden setup with only 4 plants (it holds 7). i typically use soil and stick with it, but its usually a littler harder in the winter, more costly too- id have to heat my outdoor greenhouse pretty insanely. BUT i read about the aero alot on this site and wanted to give it a whirl, i had these 4 seedlings just hanging out sooooo...

anyway - aero w/4 plants. using Advanced Nutrients, Vitaboost Pro for the time being.

they have only been in the aerogarden for 2 days. i did rinse the roots, but there is some dirt still clinging on to them slighty.

18/6 lighting with are the aerogarden "grow lights" some form of CFL, there are 2 in the system. pump is on 24/7.

let me know what you meant, if this wasnt it.

ive had some pH issues but im going to pick up some stuff that another friend on here recommened to me, that has buffers to stabilize the pH. when i mix my nutes its very high, i pH down and put in the resovoir and hours later it drops into the 4's. i usually put it in at about 5.8.

just looking for a way to get some consistency. im going to try the Tetra Easy Balance and see how it goes

well i just took a couple hits of hash and it got me thinking-

maybe im mixing the nutes up wrong? ive never done the hydro/aero before so im a newbie in those regards.

this is what i do:
fill up 1 gal of tap water
pH the tap water to neutral.
add nutes (im using 1/4 strength for now)
pH down until about 5.8 or so.

then i just dump it in the resovoir.

is this an ass backwards way of mixing hydro nutes?

UPDATE

i got that Tetra Easy Balance, put my plants on nutes in the resovoir for the first time (they were being foliar fed and only in pHed water).

that was yesterday afternoon, this morning, most platns had about 1.5 cm of growth.

i also had a Big Bud seed germinate in less than 6 hours. unreal

i just transplanted one today from soil (that was having ph issues) to hydro with RW in a dwc system using 2 aquarium air pumps for a single 3 gal container with 2 sites as veg res unit only, will move to bigger res when i flip the switch on them, here was my issues, the plants are about 8 wks old and 7 " tall all have multiple mature leaf sites and really good node growth, under 130w of cfl 16/8 a day, i then really started to see growth slow way down to almost nothing for almost 2 wks. I did a bunch of reading hear and other places as well found a simple hydro dwc design and decided to try my hand at aqua culture gardening, it been almost 3 hrs since i transplanted the little girl and am yet to see wilting at all,i also put her in the dark so she could rest a little and will throw here in the light after 8hrs, here is what i did. I got my dwc ready for action first, i grabbed a bucket and washed it with soap and water and rinsed well i then filled it with luke warm almost unoticable temp then ph'ed the water to minimize shock, clorine will kill ur plants and all tap water has it, took a small trowel and lossened the dirt in pot then lift the plant to the buck with the water and gently dunked the root ball in the water with a little pating action to help loosen a little more slight the RW cude to allow some of the root to hang a little put in basket-pot installed a neo-cuff around the stem, I will keep people posted on how the plants doing here is a pic, the last one is a sibling started at the same time also in soil, temp are always in check at 70 f air soil and nut solution humidity is also very stable @ 60-70%, if any one has advice for me feel free to chime in sry if this is thread jacking but it seemed like it fit the sudject at hand
