you can touch them with your hands just wipe them down with a clean cloth after, or just use the cloth as a barrier in the first place.

You can handle the lamp by holding the metal socket part, but you shouldn't touch the glass with your bare hands. If you do, simple wiping with a cloth won't fix it. It must be carefully cleaned with a solvent that will remove the oil, and leave no residue.
The oil from your hands will decrease the light output for the life of the lamp.
So I wear white cotton gloves.

The "no touch" rule is for HALOGEN lamps...not HID lamps folks.
Call Eye/Hortilux or sunmaster directly if you don't believe me. I was in the industry for years and the only time I heard this type of speak was from folks walking in the door. NONE of the reps ever said "make sure nobody TOUCHES THE BULB!"
It's always good to wipe the lamp and keep it clean so that every bit of the light the lamp produces is utilized..but other than that..it's simply not true that it will shorten the life of the lamp or it'll explode if you touch it.

To be honest i hadnt heard one way or another if it was ok to, just by common sense i tried not to touch the bulb and always try to use the cardboard sleeve as a kind of socket when changing bulbs around.
I figured though that if you had greasy hands and left a greasy finger print on the bulb that this could hot up and cause the outer casing to crack, I dont know how possible it is, but it seemed logical to me

i got finger prints burned into the bulb pitting but they make it 12 months. Hid is not Explosive as you make the out to be

I havent made it out to be anyway, its just the way i thought, I will still continue to carry on as I have been because precaution is better than no precaution.
I have the shit luck where i would be that one in 60 million where it did happen.

I didn't say that touching the glass would hurt the lamp, it's just that the oil from your fingers is difficult to remove, and if you don't remove it, it will diminish the light, just like keeping a dirty glass on your hood.
I like the exploding part tho, when we're finished with the lamps, we could rub them up with our bare hands and throw them at terrorists.

i still tell people not to touch them because it will explode because it helps them remember to keep their shit clean. i have had water sprayed on my thousie and it didnt crack/explode. (dont ever try that, not saying it wont) but it keeps people from being careless if they have a sence of DANGER! this will explode! throw at neariest terrorist. lol. but yes dont ever touch, it will explode....glass shards will fly in your face and the gas will make your face look like arnold schwarzenegger in total recall!
