From personal experience which is better? What do you prefer and why?

I do both. Top, then LST. LST gets more tops faster. Topping keeps them even, equal, more consistent.

Depends on the strain, some finicky ones hate having the main cola cut compared to others.

If it's pretty hearty, might as well do both

I do both, you can definitely maximize your yield as first time grower i did see a big difference between having one main cola than having 2 o 3 using topping and a bushy plant when using LST.
