I thought u were supposed to top during the veg stage?? doesn't topping in the flowering stage cut off buds and make the flowering longer???

You can top whenever you want to.

Early Vegetative Pruning

After the tops come off, there's a window of opportunity to get those second-story branches to reach up to the top floor and stay there. After I've got the four main tops at the same level (more or less) and the plant is throwing growth shoots on those top branches, I'll FIM those new shoots at the top. This creates a thick canopy of bud sites at the top, and the secondary bud sites are close to the top as well. I use this method for plants that will finish flowering at about two & one-half feet. Anything shorter, like in a clone, quick turnaround garden, the FIMing should happen straight away. FIM it early (fourth or fifth leaf set) to keep it short. These seedlings were topped at the fourth node (leaf set), and FIM'd later to gain height.

The results are in!

This is the result of all that pruning and FIMing.

Each of those tops will be a nice, tight Northern Lights bud.

The words are used interchangablely. I start by pruning a leaf from each node in a staircase pattern, as soon as the first 5 bladed leaf appears. This will stimulate lateral growth and open the plant to more light.

I top around the 4-5 node, using the FIM technique, leaving about 20% of the growth tip intact. Topping will create at least 2 new budding sites, and with proper use of the FIM technique I have had as many as 5, and have heard of as many as 8. Topping will allow bottom branches time to grow and catch up, making them closer to the lights.

With proper training and manipulation, you can get these giant plants to grow horizontal, effectivly reducing the overall height of your garden as much as 50%. This way you can lower the lights as close as possible to all budding sites. With many budding sites very close to the light, you will get a better yeild of grade "A" bud. As opposed to having smaller shaded buds trapped under an untrained canopy, which will never fully develop.

ok, sometimes i top at very early veg stage then continue to top up to the second week of flower. or once in flower if they get to big in the first 2 weeks i top or bend. i feel if you top a potential 10 gram cola at an early stage you will end up with two 5 gram colas. i think it all evens out. in some cases you can yeild more by topping.

topping, fimming, bending...whatever you call it you are doing the same thing. the tips of the shoots carry growth hormones that send signals to the lower branches. it tells the branches "i am still growing so you don't have to". if you bend or remove the tips these signals are not recieved by the lower branches. this gives them the ok to grow.

I dont think its a good idea to top a plant, unless its getting to tall and you want to control the height. When you top a plant its growth is delayed for several days as its starts to put its energy towards side shoot growth. If you flower the plants earlier they will stay shorter and youll have a faster turnaround, check out the "sea of green" method for some insane yields.
