i've topped few plants in the past and had decent success but i know that some strains cant be topped e.g big bud. so my question is can 'northern soul'(this is a skunk No.1/northern lights cross), sharks breath and coletrain be topped.

cheers mate,as a side question to anyone that can answer me why is it that some strains can be toped whilst others cant?

I had a friend who topped a big bud plant over 6 times in the season before she started flowering. Im pretty sure almost all plants can be topped, just some are better for topping then others I guess. If you have a plant that is really close nodes and really bushy growth already, you might not want to top it, but if its just growing really tall and upwards, I would top a few times to get more of a bush.

I plan on topping all my ladies next year, either once or twice.

wot in ur opinion is the best times for topping, that is; earliest and latest times during the veg cycle. i was always led to believe that topping shocked them a bit and it took a week or so to recover, is this true? im a reasonably experienced grower( old school soil/organic) but ive not done a lotta research on topping and i feel that it may be the way to go for me. any and all info would well appreciated, or if anyone can point me in the direction of a good topping thread they know. cheers

I usually top earlier than later around the 3rd node I have let some go to 5th node giving me 4 main colas usually

Yes they will take a bit of time to repair, I wouldnt top during flowering or right before flowering. I would top when girls are only 4-6 inches tall, just seedlings becoming a small plant. Then top again in a couple weeks once those tops start growing. I would trying supercropping and LST if you havnt.

when topping should i really go to the bother of using a sterile razor blade or justa pair of scissors? to be honest first time i tried it all i did was pinch it off with my finger nails and it worked fine but i seem to recall reading somewhere about all sorts of infection type shit getting into the plant. any opinions?

It is best to top a branchy multi bud site plant and veer from topping on plants that are of the single cola structure. You could loose yield on these instead of promote more sites. I top quite a bit of my plants and have done a lil of both in my journal now to my strawberry cough. Hope this helps.

Here is a Herijuana plant that is branchy and good for topping.
