Topping. How do I do it??

Im curious at what stage should I top at? I take clones, never worked with seeds before so Im wondering if I should top them at the point in veg when they get that 3rd node? Also how long after you top should you put them in flower?? Is their a time frame? Just need some clarity....

Thanks I read you thread and it was helpful. Ive seen the pinching method before but I think the topping may work better.
