This is what The Black looked like at harvest...Sooo...Let me say this...In had three outdoor plants in 5 gallon cloth pots...I have harvested two and I yielded 8 Oz's off of both of them....My Agent orange is still developing and the weather is getting rainy and shitty and I am experiencing bud rot in spots!
With that said, I topped mine several times (6) during veg...I started them from clones in May and topped them every couple of weeks, they started to stretch the first of August! I had a LOT of tops!
Oh and I tried "back building" on a coupe tops, I saw no difference in growth...
Just my two pennies worth!

Thanks! I did not "back build" The Black, in the picture...I snipped a couple tops on the other two you see behind The Black. I read about "Back building" on here so I thought I would try it on a couple of my plants just to test it.
The Black was too far along....The Black Cherry Soda was about 2 weeks behind The Black and the Agent orange dragged behind both by 2 weeks.
So I snipped a couple tops on the Black Cherry Soda at 6 weeks and the Agent orange at 4 weeks. Again I saw no difference on Flowers that were "back built" and ones that I left alone.

Definitely recommend topping as it will greatly increase yields. I prefer to combine topping with LST throughout the grow for an even bigger increase.
It's always best to top early on so they have time to recover before flower. Rule of thumb is once there are 3-5 nodes on the plant, you can begin topping.

I have always been a big proponent of topping when growing in good sun. But this year I had several plants split where I topped them, the Hurricane Head being the biggest loss. If you do top, wrap some duct tape around the "Y" when they start to get weight on them. And I wouldn't top any later than about late July. I had a couple of new strains this year, and they started to flower earlier than I thought they would. I had topped them right before they flowered. I'm sure it cost me some weight.
I've had as many as 128 main tops, which is topping 7 times. But 4 times, or 16 main tops is what I usually do. My BIL is like treemansbuds, he never tops.

I got duct tape around my Y as well. I tried to bend just a little bit when plant was older, and creeeeek, nice split.. good thing it was only a little bit thou, saved it with the tape. My dog broke my other plant in 2 pieces completely sabotaged.

To the OP. Everyone has their own ways. I normally top early just above the second set of true leaves. This gives me 4 main colas.
