Idk honestly, just never topped before something didn’t seem right.

There's no 'right' place or time to top. Depends what your plans are for your plants.
With regular seeds I'll let them get 7 or 8 nodes then top above the 4th node and use the top to flower somewhere else to find out the sex of the plant.
Mainliners will top above the 2nd strong node to do their thing. ScroGers will try to FIM to get multiple tops ASAP.
The plant is yours to shape and manipulate as you see fit and pretty forgiving of abuse.

It's 100% fine, Iv'e been doing that for years and TBH, I top earlier.
