I have two northern lights plants growing in 3 gallon fabric pots of Coco. I am wondering what the best option for training would be. Does genetics play a role in how you guys choose to train your plants?

I have read that generally topping and then lst is often best, but it seems like such a bushy strain and the lower parts of the plant are really starting to fill in with a lot of branches already so i am wondering if I would see the full benefits of topping or if it would be better to only lst so they don't have to waste the time/energy recovering. I'm thinking that topping might help with light penetration though and I would like to take cuttings for clones eventually so promoting growth of more branches would be beneficial. They are in a 2X3 cabinet 6ft tall, so they have room to grow both up and out.

This is my first grow so I'm a little hesitant to make any more cuts than necessary, but I would if it will greatly improve yields.

I have the NL seeds from RQS and for some reason both of my plants have grown taller than some sativas I have. I know NL is an indica which are generally short, maybe my seeds just had weird genetics.

I’ve heard they can get pretty tall.

if you got the room then both. if you look at my grow i just topped and LST'd for 3 days i think before removing the ties. glad i didn't go through with the LST plants right now are too bushy for my space but it's mainly due to me only running 1 light.

Top then tie down lower branches (LST) until you have a nice round beach ball of a plant then flip lights..

Could be best to top at lights out.. Probably doesn't really matter though..

And now since I would like to clone the top would it be better to wait a little longer to top so I can remove a bit bigger of a piece without causing excessive stress?

Is there a Best time of day to top?

dont think it matters.i wouldn't top if you have other major issues that need to be fixed though but looking at your pic i really don't see any major issues that i'd be concerned about. i say this because i would rather have a healthy plant and top it to recover faster versus a plant that is in the shit hole and topped so your basically just adding more shit to the hole until it over fills.
