I know that when the trichromes on the plant turn to an amber -> cloudy color, it is time to harvest. But, what if I decide to harvest it earlier that that, what difference in the bud, if any, should I expect?

Slightly less of an intense high. No couch lock if that is what the strain tends to do when harvested at it's peak.

Bud that is not allowed to ripen properly will be inferior.

Yeah, you can quote me on that.

You'll get your bud earlier, but...
It won't smell as good,
it won't weigh as much,
it won't taste as good,
the high won't last as long, and
the girls won't like you as much!

Radio Shack has a magnifying glass for like 10 bucks from what I hear.

You will have a more energized high with clear trichomes.
