walmart, home de pot, and lowes all carry suitable timers, just be sure it can handle the amps

(light wattage/input voltage = amperage)

yeh make sure you get a timer thats compatable with a hid light if thats what your using coz standard timers can blow very quickly,or they wont work right,ie they wont turn off or on lights when they should,,,,,personal experience!peace

Here's some good advise,

Go to CVS if you live in the USA, go to the section that has lightbulbs and electronics, you can get a decent three pronged digital timer for $9.99 I priced the same or similar timer at Lowes and Home Depot, they are twice as much at HD and Lowes, CVS has it cheaper ;)

(Edit) I believe it has 8 or 12 on/off settings per day. The old intermatics have the same 8 settings per day if memory serves/ While the new Intermatic dig timers have 24 on and off settings per day, they are not reliable.

I've shut down my medical marij grow, and just dug out a few of the timers I have on hand, Here's a picture of them below, had to dig them out of my storage box.

The one on the far left is the $9.99 CVS digital timer, it's 1725 max watts and 15amp and has three pins and grounded.

The two dig timers in the middle are Intermatic older reliable style digital timers, these are excellent. The one on the far right is a newer Intermatic, that is the biggest piece of crap timer that I've ever bought. I had two fail on me in one year. All my grow lights are line conditioned and are on fairly large APC UPS's, so electrical issues did not kill these timers. Many people on many forums have also had failures with the newer Intermatic dig. timers, avoid them if posible.

I picked up a couple CVS $9.99 dig timers and they are simple to program and built like a tank. The silver tape on the CVS timer is just to cover the red light, to prevent hermies and such
