Those of you who have read the latest Weed World will
probably be aware of the case of Little Amsterdam in Blackpool, a well
established head shop and mail-order business. The shop had a PDQ machine
installed last June. A PDQ machine is the terminal that you swipe credit &
debit cards through, it is connected via the phone line to the card
companies computers and verifies and authorises the transaction before
printing off a receipt which the customer then signs. These days its
difficult to run a business, especially a mail-order business, without one
of these machines - or for that matter an account with a card processing
company.
Little Amsterdam's terminal is leased from Barclays Merchant Services, one
of the two main companies offering this facility in the UK. The shop has now
been informed by BMS that they are revoking the agreement for the terminal
and that it will no longer operate as from 20th October. The reason? Little
Amsterdam sells cannabis seeds and the bank does not wished to be involved
in the venture.
Mr Robert Craxton from Barclays Merchant Services has told the shop that if
they are informed of other Merchant sites selling cannabis seeds they will
revoke their PDQ agreements as well.
Little Amsterdam appealed against the decision, which was dismissed and now
they have appealed to the Banking Ombudsman. It would appear that the bank
is legally entitled to act in this way.
Anybody who may know better or who has sympathetic press contacts etc. are
invited to call Little Amsterdam on - 01253 752280
The plot thickens as today I learn of a shop in Bournemouth name of King
Bong who have had their application for a PDQ turned down due to the nature
of their product range. This time the company involved are HSBC (the old
Midland Bank) who also handle the PDQ accounts for the Co-op Bank. After
being pushed to be more specific on what exactly they disapproved of the
woman who was dealing with the application mentioned bongs & cannabis seeds.
King Bong are also keen to fight this victimisation and if anybody can help
their number is 01202 296665
