thinking of an ugrade how much better?

Ok ive been running a 400 watt metal hailde for my grows for a long time now and ive been thinking of moving up to 600 watt mh/hps how much better is it going to be? And is there alot more heat from a 600?
 
so you've been running a 400watt MH only for the entire grow? Having an HPS for flowering will definitely be a big improvement...especially the jump from 400 to 600watts, and yes it will give off more heat, but I imagine a 600watt HPS will give off just a little bit more heat than a 400watt MH as MH's run hotter, as long as you have the ventilation or a cooltube you should be fine :)
 
Yeah ive been rinning a 400 mh start to finish with a ballast thats prolly 20 years old lol.. hence why im looking to upgrade to a digital 600w ballast. Also im thinking of changeing from a cooltube to a air cooled hood for more light.

i use 20 year old ballast for everything :clap:

hps has more lumans then mh , plus your goin up 200w so , yea you'll have a lot more light to work with.
its not that much hotter then a 400 is.

i use mh an hps for bloom , always have , an have also used strait mh ........... lil to no difference against a plain hps.

A 600w has the most lumens per watt. In that regard its the most efficient of the HID lights. It will be a tad hotter but if you got a cooltube or air cooled reflector hooked up to a 200cfm or higher fan it'd be fine. My 600w runs very cool with an air cooled hood.
 
I do have a cooltube already but thinking of also upgrading to a large hood for a bigger footprint. Im growing in a 4x4 tent with a 490 cfm fan blowing all the heat out
 
Im just happy i stumbled apon a thread with people who realize you CAN flower with an MH and not get people arguing saying you can't yet they've never tried....

I too had a 400 Mh and 400HPS. I just recently switched to 600MH/HPS

MAn I don't know what I was thinking i should got on earlier!

Yeah im cheap and have been putting off the upgrade but def need to just fork over thw cash and do it :-)

I think the reason people use hps over mh is for the extra lumens. My 600w MH is 55,000 lumens but my 600w HPS is 96,000 lumens. Any light would work for flowering as long as its 12 on 12 off.
