Hello all, I have been growing for my own use for a few years and started with a simple desk turned into a grow box. I know I researched like crazy trying to figure out the correct way of doing things and never really found the answer. I was board this winter and decided to experiment with a grow that anyone could do. First thing first is you need a grow room, it can be as large as a garage or as small as a computer case. Its your choice, capabilities, and resources. I have taken a old desk I had in the garage that is 18"wx18"dx30"t.
  1. I removed the inner shelves and spray glued aluminum foil to the inside surfaces. I drilled 4 1inch holes along the bottom of the box for a passive intake. I have one computer fan moving air around inside the box and a exhaust fan(bathroom fan) with a home made carbon filter(Carbon filter consist of 6 carbon fish tank filters in a cereal box with a bunch of holes punched in it and hooked up to my exhaust fan via dryer duct). I got a temp/humidity gauge also.
  2. My lighting consists of a 14"x14" piece of cardboard doubled up with three sockets in a triangle pattern. wrapped with aluminum foil. Hung by a standard plant hanging chain set. I use 3 CFL 23w flood style lights for vegging( flood style because you can focus the light directly at the plants
instead of everywhere in the box. I have one T-5 20w 22inch fixture in one corner of my box. For flowering I add Y-adapters and add 3 26w warm CFL helical bulbs.
  3. I started bag seeds in damp paper towels in a ziplock and put them underneath the bathroom sink. The seeds were ready in 2 days, all of them with about 1/4 inch root showing. I used jiffy pots tomato starter peet pellets and put the seeds about a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch(about twice the length the root showing from the seed.)
  4. After week growing(had 4 serrated leaves growing well) transplanted into jiffy tomato pots(about 1/3 gallon) using soil from my back yard(live in the northwest).
  5. Now i am at 3 weeks growth for my 6 plants pictured with the center plant being a month old. I have not used any nutes yet. I will most likely use african violet for flowering nutes. grow1.jpggrow2.jpggrow3.jpggrow4.jpggrow5.jpggrow6.jpg
  6. The middle plant is a clear case of over watering and not enough drainage and the other 6 are a little underwatered. I just wanted to show how easy it is to come back from a little water issue.

Thanks for reading, I am also new to the forum. decided to finally join.

After you load pics into the line, just click 'insert inline' in the bottom right, then close.
When you get back to the dialog box, double click each pic, and it will open another box to center and enlarge the pic.;-)

Well from the sounds of things you've got it all worked out. Good job of growing on the cheap I must say but remember you get what you pay for. Happy growing.
