The U.S. sucks...or does it?

There are many aspects of the government and the legal system and the horribly detached (not to mention corrupt) politicians that need reform. But if you were one of the wealthy elite with actual power to change policy for the benefit of the nation and its continued prosperity, there is a heavy burden on your shoulders. You do actually have to consider the fact that; some decisions may involve the deaths of innocent people for the good of many. Other policies are not so dramatic, but will affect the lives of millions, some negatively, some positively.

More importantly, there are tons of unfair laws on the books that simply do not affect us so we never give them a thought.

My wife mentioned something that made me think recently.

If the U.S. had fair & just laws regarding recreational drugs, say; based on the damage they cause, would we really have as large a complaint against the government, as we all do now?

The U.S. would gain incredible points in my mind if it had fair laws on drug use.

I love this country. I do not agree with what is happening in this country though. It's one big corporation and it's full of lobbying and is totally corrupt at this point. I would still complain even if they did have fair drug laws, drugs are a small part of the big picture. I feel that we are no longer a we the people country, have we ever been? My tax dollars are paying for weapons used to kill people, our education system is turning into shit. High rollers are handed pardons left and right. There is no accountablilty among our politicians. We have people without health insurance. We have an administration that does whatever it wants. Our forefathers would be ashamed, I think? For all I know they were corrupt too.

you're right! it's the usurpation of our basic human right to accept whatever liability accommodates our choices.

we also surrender the choice to accept those liabilities when we cause the government to have to "deal" with us. for example, when a person who is high interrupts the function of another individual by wrecking their car or neglecting hygiene and getting an infection while not having adequate money to treat said infection.

some people are slackers but if you take the government safety nets out of the way they will shape up, fast!

government is like table manors; sure, you can eat with your hands but it seems so much more civilized to use the fork and knife. people like pretentiousness, piety, etc.. government feeds on this.

You can become them, you know? No need to complain once you're in.

I fully agree with all your complaints here. If drugs were all legal we would still have much to complain about. But complaining isn't revolting.

Is the U.S. in a state so terrible that its people need to revolt to get things under control?

I don't think so. I say this because the absolutely only way I break a law is in drug use. So if I didn't have the paranoia of a lawman giving me shit over use, I would just keep moving along, living everyday life like everyone else. I pay taxes and expect the police to come when I need them. If I need the courts I can hire a lawyer and assume there will be a decision in my favor, if I have just grounds for my case. Capitalism sucks because it throws people values all out of whack. They value money above ALL, even human life. But a capitalistic nation (like the U.S.) does give its ordinary people the opportunity of an easier life.

There is only one area that deserves attention and the current president has brought this to everyone's eyes. The president does not really answer to the people. He answers to the major capitalists who got him in office. They bought his position and expect decisions during his term which will benefit them. There is absolutely no concern for 'we the people', anymore.

I wish this would change. Unfortunately, the only way this country knows how to change things is thru litigation and bureaucracy. Which again puts law makers in charge of the change, when what we need is the people in charge of change. Though I have no solution myself, yet.

You can start by running for City Council. From there, run for State Senator. After that, run for Congress. Then vote your conscious.

This is what I was getting at, it's our country and not his solely. If we vote to bring troops home they should come home. If we vote to implement health care it should happen. Money isn't freedom. I'm a damn proud American I love this country and yes I DO VOTE.

I appreciate your passion, Gygax, but did you watch the last Democrat debat? If so, did you see the questions posed by the UTube people? If so, are these the people whom you want deciding our foreign policy ... or anything else for that matter?

It pretty much does suck; the pulbic's causes have never been of any great importance. Every so often, mostly in textbooks used for public policy courses, you can find compiled public opinion polls covering nearly every significant domestic and foreign policy issue and the contrasting actual implemented policy. If you were ever of the illusion that we were under the rule of the people, you should seek out one of these. Not only do the policy makers disregard the wishes of the people, they have contempt for it. Does anyone recall the administration laying out the New-Old Europe line of bullshit in the run-up to the war? The distinction made was that New Europe had become enlightened about the need of interventionist policies, while Old Europe was corrupt and dumb. In reality, New Europe had gone against the desires of the overwhelming majority of their citizens, and Old Europe didn't. And the media conformed, as they always do, to the views of the makers. What was it Wolfowitz called Turkey for not allowing us to use their country as a staging ground for the invasion? Yeah, he called their civilian leadership "weak" for folding to the public's demands, and said they should "apologize to us" for that shortcoming.

Kind of like: "Let them eat cake."

Well if you want to put Wolfie under the guillotine, you'll get no complaints from me.

Suicide says: "You can become them, you know? No need to complain once you're in." I say: good try but no cigar. Unless you're born an elite, and graduate from an Ivy league school, good luck ever reaching a seat of real power. It's an illusion created by the elites to keep us controlled. "you can become one you know" Bullshit, it's like becoming a king, no deal.

exactly. and the laws in place like the drug war and a fake 2 party systems are all for their benefit, not the people's.

the wars they start are for them, not us. the lives lost are trivial compared the power gain or financial hold.

it makes me sick to one degree. we have private kings instead of public ones. but larger things are at work. and people need to make tough decisions. i understand this but we have evolved to where the people now have no voice. because those in power no longer care what we want. and the government has again become liars murderers in order to engage yet another war. 3 quarters of a billion dollars in 5 years of war? imagine the places that money could have been spent, inside our borders.
