The price is $26,900, I can get it for $22,500 if I put half down (I can). I'll still have enough money to apply for DOT and MC numbers and pay for insurance through my boss. I'll have enough cash left to pay for any unexpected truck maintenance issues and fuel for a while, I'll really be stretching my savings pretty thin, but I could do it.

I don't know, I have a lot of things to think about. This seems like a nice opportunity for me, not everyone getting started in this business has someone to help them out and make sure they have plenty of miles to run to be successful and make it

What do you guys here think about it, should I do it?

I applaud anyone wanting to go into business for themselves! That is a very low price for a tractor, shouldn't be too hard to get that paid off in a year or two.

My concern isn't about your abilities or even the truck you're looking at, but the direction of the industry as a whole for the next few years;

Not sure about South of the border but here there is a huge shortage of drivers and owners. I have buddies that operate a brokerage and they are as busy or busier than ever trying to keep up. Sorry what do you do again?

I'm nobody to ask about your industry. So, just some ideas:

Why not map a path toward buying your own truck and business without taking a loan? I'm not talking about putting this deal off for decades, I mean, if you have half now, maybe you could figure out how to increase you saving rate to put away that last $11,000 or sell something so that you could avoid taking out a loan. Is there a reason for making the move now?

The more you know the better decisions you'll make.

If you explain to you boss that you aren't ready but will be glad for his help later, that asset won't go away just because you decide to wait a little longer. If he pressures you then maybe it's not such a good deal after all.

There are good tax reasons (sometimes and here anyways) to actually borrow the money for an asset for a business. The business pays the loan not you personally. The tax right offs for the interest of the loan keep profits in your hands and not the tax man is one. I’m no expert either though. Best to talk to an accountant and a business consultant, we have a few programs here where you can access a professional for free consultations.
