I ran many construction projects in and around Chicago. Many of the 100+ year old buildings had that basic setup. These were from the days when every elevator had an operating attendant. Those guys knew everything going on in the building.

Moms uncles used to be the towns phone operator, everyone dialed 0 then he would pass on the phone call, he heard everyone’s gossip in town..

I remember having a phone number that started with 2 letters (LA) instead of numbers and a party line that you could hear other neighbors talking when you picked up the receiver (of your black bakelite phone that sat in the hallway)
