The Harm of Using Neem Oil as Soil Drench

I heard this can be good to control fungus gnats and the like. Buy I also heard it can kill beneficial microbes and nematodes.

So which is it?

It's not very effective for fungus gnat; I'd buy vectobac or gnatrol or any other B. thuringiensis israelensis based product. It's a bacterial & specific to fungus gnats. Wipes them out very quickly.

Neem oil does have any fungal properties, so it will effect beneficial fungi if you're adding them.

I haven't actually mixed my soil yet so I don't have gnats and hopefully never will.

Will crabmeal added as an amendment prevent gnats? DE?

Get neem meal for mixing in the soil. A layer of sand, perlite or mulch will rid fungus gnats. It breaks thier breeding cycle.

Also over watering tends to go hand in hand with fungus gnats.

I'm aware of the watering.

What do you mean by layer of perlite? I plan to do 65/30/5 soil perlite crab meal. Do you mean just literally do a flat layer of perlite?

I use Neem as preventive for mites every few weeks until flower. They say its good for thrips too but I don't have very good luck with it alone.

Spinosad for thrips early on in the grow.

BTi for fungus gnats early on in the grow. BTi will only kill larvae. If you do have fliers a small vacume comes in handy, a thick layer of rice hull mulch (4") slows them down and makes vacuuming them up easy. Not a big I just dump the hulls in my garden after.

I found this product to be a god price on BTi, much cheaper than mosquito dunks when you compare the % amounts

have to agree with White on this layer of sand......put about and in or 2 on the top of the soil, an it will snuff them out.....you could also use a yellow cup rubbed with vasaline on a stick for the rest, they'll just stick to it and die....is another option

don't want those beautiful nuggs tasting like neem oil do ya???

Use Neem oil in flower and you might as well throw that bud in the hash bucket because you can't smoke it..

.. it's nasty stuff, instead I keep a 9" fan on the floor also yellow stickies to monitor and I don't have a problem with gnats, (the fan breaks their generations) & in a couple of weeks they're all gone, until you open up your next bag of fox farm !?:wall:

You know the thread is about soil drench right? So why would the nugs ever taste like neem oil?

Sorry that came out rude. Not my intention.

Don't fk with ICGreen they really will ban you. Thanks for the recommendations.

I've never had thrips, mites or pests. Once I got sugar and wood ants in a bag of damp coco I left out. And another time I got gnats in my latest coco grow but I instantly nuked them by adding peroxide to my feed, little shits were gone in 3 days.

Do all these pests come from soil?

i'm considering root intake when i said that....

good rule of thumb is to stay away from the oil in the first place, there are plenty of natural things that can take those little buggers out, other than that.....

Oh I've been banned. Not one to care at all.
Soil drench of neem? Don't think thats a good idea for micros or roots.

Gnats are in a lot of bagged/moist mediums including EWC.
I once had the bright idea of using bagged Composted cow manure and was surprised as hell to find amnityville horror when I walked into the room.

Well that was the whole question of the thread which no one really answered XD

The crab meal should help break down parasitic nematodes and shred soft bodied insects and larvae which I guess also means no worms =( I like worms. I go out of my way to get them off the concrete when it rains.

But obviously I can't use peroxide for gnats or fungus in soil because it will just kill everything. So I was wondering maybe neem would be alright but the info is so mixed. I see some say yes and others saying no.

Sorry that post came out unintentionally rude.

I figured that's likely what was meant. Other than sand and chems what natural effective preventatives help nuke those flying fuckers?

They were happy to ban me I am sure. That left is so tolerant of other views than their own.

Soil drench would only not do damage if it was diluted way down. The meal in the soil would be much better way to go. The oil works by direct contact on the bug.
