[h=1]Cybersecurity Bill Is Blocked in Senate by G.O.P. Filibuster[/h]

GOP blocked a very shady bill today that the Obama administration tried to steam roll through. They didn't care that there wasn't enough time to look at and debate it all they just wanted it passed. On top of that the bill had amendments added to it from abortion bands to gun control absolutely ridiculous! NSA is known for giving two fucks about American liberties, now they want the internet also. Best news I have seen in some time.

Ok first of all they voted to stop debate and never reach a point where they debate then put it to a final vote. So yea, there would have been time to debate. Secondly there were 110 ammendments on the bill. The gun control one your referring to would prohibit sale of high capacity magazines over the internet. The abortion "ban" would just make the final abortion time in DC to 20 weeks in. When recent study says the fetus starts to feel things physically. You just drive a bit and your good at week 21. No big deal. The way you say it makes the amendments sound worse than they are. Plus the bills a good one. Steps up our security for a cyber attack and makes businesses and government share their experiences with attacks they have endured so everyone can be better prepared for them in the future. Also in wake of twice the population of the US losing power in India and the power outages a few weeks ago here in the US the bill would put requirements in place to improve the security and functionality of our own grid. YAY no bill its great. Thanks (edit) Mcain for pointing out that this is too much to ask of businesses and helping to kill the bill. We all know businesses are people. Whata buncha BS.

I read the title and got excited that the gop might have done something good, now a little dissapointed. Still I did not care for this cyber security bill but the gop will have to do much more than that before I am pleased with them.

Regarding the pain felt, the study did not determine that a fetus could feel pain at week 20, only that portions of the developing nervous system could function. There may well be an inability to comprehend pain for what it is at this stage of development, no one can tell. This is another ruse used to continualy infringe on a woman's right to do as she wishes with her own body.

But it also would have granted companies the power to spy on users, share personal information of innocent users with the government, and use countermeasures, which could involve blocking or dropping packets – all in the name of protecting against vaguely defined "cybersecurity threats". For example, under the bill, a "cybersecurity threat" existed whenever a company perceives a user impairing the availability of its networks. As a result, surveillance would be outsourced to private companies that are not governed by the fourth amendment – the constitutional amendment granting protection from unreasonable search and seizure. And when using countermeasures, companies can modify, block, or disrupt internet traffic so long as they believe the actions are allowed by the vague definitions of the bill.

Amendments it depends on your view of the amendments, I find some of them a bit intrusive and do not support stupid ass laws.

20 weeks on abortion? I am not a doctor and doubt you are but what i have heard is no medical evidence to justify changing the 24 week limit.

This was a big win for citizens private data and tax payers. This bill was about private companies information being filtered to the government.

These folk who are oh so concerned about the possibility of pain being felt by a fetus are the ones who are very upset at the cost incurred by following laws insisting that chickens don't spend their entire lives in a 1 foot by 1 foot by 8 inch boxes.

I have to missing something here canndo, did you just compare the human life to living conditions of livestock? Which I agree is appalling btw, so leave me out of that camp, but come on. Compare the taking of an innocent human life to the death penalty if you want, but living conditions of livestock? ew

I just pointed out that the amendments are not as bad as the way you stated it made them sound. Also made it clear he didn't "steamroll" it in quite like you stated, not allowing time for debate. Also pointed out how the GOP fought against it in the interest of business and we shouldn't be patting them on the back for that. While stating an opinion of why we need a bill like this one (seems at face value). I did not read into the specifics about invading peoples privacy. Who would be for that, not I. The way you stated everything else makes me take that at a half truth until I can do some research on the subject personally. Although its dead know so it doesn't really matter. You right about the fetus study. I should of said potentially could start to feel something instead. Never said anything about pain tho.

No sweat, I don't like giving Dem an inch on gun laws nor Rubes an inch on abortion.

Now watch what I said. The discussion is not about the taking of a human life, but only a suggestion that maybe, possibly, a fetus might feel pain at 20 weeks. The law intended that that fetus maybe, possibly should not be aborted because of that pain but it was certainly ok before 20 weeks.

What I was comparing was the notion that those who were so concerned about the pain of a non-person, a non entity that was not aware, were not so concerned about chickens who obviously felt pain throughout their entire lives.

I was not comparing a human life with the life of a chicken, I was comparing a group of people's lack of real regard for the pain an entity might be forced to endure.

I wasn't sure, that's why I asked, thanks for taking the time to clarify. I would despise turning this thread into an abortion argument as much as i despise sneaking of amendments into a bill that couldn't stand on their own.

I'm unashamedly guilty of thinking human life > animal comfort but admit the horrors of chicken farms, as well as cattle farms. It's their own fault for being so damn tasty. (j/k, I buy free range)

I am species centric as well. It is the absurdity of some of the more common rightist attitudes and behaviors that I like to point out, much as they enjoy pointing out leftist antics.
