Alkylmercury is a name with which to conjure demons. It is one of chemistry's boogiemen, along with thalidomide and PCBs.
And my personal phobia reagents: methyl iodide and hydrofluoric acid.

A few droplets on the fucking gloves. That is frightening to this former lab monkey.

This was a professor of chemistry.
 
I have a fear ... more visceral than entirely rational ... that PFAs might be a health disaster in the making. They're totally bioinert, y'know, like asbestos. I imagine a very long stimulus/response cycle made worse by the long long residence time in the body.

I agree. I got rid of all non-stick cookware many years ago for the same nagging reason. "Don't heat above X degrees", etc. Fluorocarbons kinda freak me out
