Thai Sativa Outdoor Scrog Grow

G'day, well we weren't as lucky as last year which produced only 1 male from 8 plants, this year I've had to remove 5 males from the original 9 scrog plants. Here's 1 of the males pictured below.
View attachment 5167819
Here's what the screen looks like after removing all of the males.
View attachment 5167806
Seems like a lot of males but when you add in the outside back up 3 plants, which 2 of them were females, then that gives 6 females and 6 males out of the original 12 seeds.
Anyway is what it is, I've since been using one of the outside female back up plants to help fill in the scrog from the other end (plant on the left that hasn't been lollipoped).
View attachment 5167807
It was no hassle at all removing the males from the scrog and one positive that came out of it was seeing how healthy the males roots were when pulling them out of the soil.
View attachment 5167808
I'd say I'm just under halfway home at this point, the plants that are left are about 13-14wks old since planting the seeds. I picked up a few gadgets online for a bit of fun and also to get a rough idea of my growing conditions. Here is a PH tester and PPM tester checking the river water I use for feeding, PH = 6.4 and PPM = 43
View attachment 5167809
The soil probe was showing a PH of 6.5-6.8 and and the fertility was around 5.5-6.0 it appears all those numbers must be providing a pretty decent grow environment going by the plants overall health.
View attachment 5167814View attachment 5167815
I have added a layer of rice straw to invite spiders & good bacteria to take care of them throughout their long upcoming flowering cycle, which I feel they are pretty well primed for this year. I found a bigger praying mantis and her ootheca to add to the room a few weeks ago. I later seen her trying to chase one of the littler ones down but she ended up settling for a meal on a couple of my ladybugs.
View attachment 5167816
Although I think the lady bugs and praying mantises would have possibly helped to control the upcoming attacks from aphids, whiteflies & mites as I won't be spraying any more neem oil, I still decided to remove the mosquito net. I feel it was restricting too much airflow as well as sunlight and it was limiting the space the plants could potentially spread out into during flower. Plus it makes it much easier on my back and the plants did seem to look a little healthier after a few days of the net being removed.
After pulling so many males I went and planted another 4 seeds and took three cuttings from two of the females, they'll hopefully get a month of veg in before flowering, they may end up running a little long but with any luck all wrapped up before chrissy.

I'll update again once I've got pistils and my training sessions start to cease. Cheers.
Love the grow diary you have going. Subbing you! That praying mantis picture eating the lady bug is cool! Where abouts are you in Thailand? I went there when I was in the US Army in 2008. I did a mission with the Royal Thai Army. We built a school house for a local village near the border of Cambodia near Pong Nam Ron. I love Thailand! The culture, the food, the people. I want to go back someday.

Cheers, I appreciate it mate. Yeah I think she mainly ate the ladybugs as there wasn't a lot of other bugs around and they were pretty easy prey haha
I'm up North, bit cooler in the mountains. Yes it's certainly a lovely place over here that's for sure.

G'day, I thought this update would be showing some buds forming but it appears flowering has been delayed by a couple weeks this year...all good they're definitely not far off anyway. Here's a pic from this afternoon after training them this morning, which is taking around 3hrs per session now, not a great deal of fun to be honest.
20220819_163413.jpg
And this picture is from where it all started, I'm certainly glad the old man mentioned I may run out of room when I showed him my original set-up haha. 20220504_111113.jpg
Here's the rough size before & after.
20220819_203422.jpg
The main stems are still fattening up but luckily I'm not having any dramas training them along the top of the net, it was a little difficult before with even 1 or 2 branches snapping but now that I can get in behind them it's much easier to place them where I want to without stressing or breaking the plant. Plus I've got a better technique I guess now that I've spent the last several months manipulating this scrog grow.
20220819_164830.jpg
All 3 autos have now sprouted, although the first WW seed never popped but the 2nd WW seed was fine.
20220819_192958.jpg20220819_193038.jpg20220819_193059.jpg
And here's one of the clones I took from the best 2 females, they seem to be going fine since moving them from the cup of water to pots of dirt. They've grown some new leaves and even the older leaves have perked up and are looking healthy. I'd say they should come along no problems at all from this point.
20220818_122216.jpg
I dressed with some bat guano, mycorrhiza and then watered it in with a little bit of Molasses a few days ago. Pretty much still no pests really attacking them at this point but I am concerned with the humidity and temperature being under the plastic sheeting but for now I prefer it to them being rained on everyday and getting blown apart when the winds pick up. Anyway, that's about all I've got to share at this point, more than likely I will provide an update on their progress again in about another week or two, by then hopefully with some buds. Cheers.

G'day, so it looks like the scrog shouldn't be too far off from flowering now. I have a plant that was started in a pot on the same day as the scrog plants 4.5 months ago and it has just started making pistils and fine leaves up top. I'd say it's around 1-2wks ahead of the scrog in terms of maturity.
20220826_163430.jpg
Hopefully will get some nice long colas from her, she's got about 70L of dirt to grow in.
20220827_094941.jpg
Those autos are still coming along. Out of the last 130 days growing, we've had rain for atleast 100 of them, plus the next 30 days it will rain pretty much everyday. With any luck the rain will ease after the end of next month though, which leaves a couple of the milder winter months for all plants to finish up in before the real cold nights hit and the days start getting longer again.
20220826_171149.jpg
20220826_171054.jpg
Those cuttings are also in their final pots now, pretty impressed how they've come along, will be interesting to see how they continue to progress.
20220827_111245.jpg
Those 4 back-up seeds that I started last month plus another 2 that popped up at the front door have all unfortunately shown male pre-flowers, except for this one, so there's still some hope. Atleast I won't be wasting any time growing those seeds out next year.
20220827_111654.jpg
The structure that's been protecting the girls from heavy rain, strong winds, animals & prying eyes has had a few tweaks to help allow for more airflow to try keep temps down etc. For now the roof is providing more benefits so I will keep it up and continue to monitor how they're tracking. Over the course of a day the temperature ranges from about 18°c-35°c inside the room and 45%-85% humidity, which isn't exactly ideal. I've got a solar fan above and below the canopy though which runs all day but they turn off during the night once their batteries go flat, which again isn't ideal but it's what I've got to work with. Days without rain, which hasn't been alot, the humidity is a fair bit lower, so possibly once the rain wraps up after next month the environment will become a little more friendly throughout flowering.
20220827_111612.jpg
I'm going to use that outside plant in the background that's started budding as a bit of a rough guide as to when I'll let these girls loose. See how we go. Appreciate anyone tuning in. Cheers.

G'day again, just thought I'd share the organic products I use to try help stay on top of the bugs during the vegetation period.
The orange packet helps control aphids, thrips, leafhoppers, mealybugs, red mites, white mites, whitefly, worms, beetles etc. And, the green packet can help prevent and eliminate fungal and bacterial diseases, phytoptera diseases & root rot etc. Still yet to use.
20220821_080655.jpg
This bottle is the neem oil which contains anti-fungal agents to prevent and kill pests such as aphids, rice leaf curl worms, cabbage worms, glass worms, vegetable weevils etc.
20220827_154745.jpg
This bottle here can help with soil fungi, various insects, termites, snails, worms, ants, aphids etc.
20220827_154733.jpg
Every now and again I'll dust the soil with diatomaceous earth and cinnamon powder, plus I have also recently started hanging some sticky traps under the canopy.

Once flowering begins I don't use those products anymore but instead I make my own sprays using some chilli, garlic, dish liquid, lemongrass, cumin, marigold etc. depending on what bugs are attacking my plants.20220827_155952.jpg
I like to run a line of ant powder around the room also to make it a little harder for the ants to get in...I will occasionally catch caterpillars, grasshoppers & crickets that then get fed to the chickens. Anyway that's about it really, although I've got nothing to treat White Powdery Mildew, which may come in handy during flower, so if anyone's got a recipe they'd like to share? I'd be very grateful. Cheers.

G'day again, only 24hrs since the last update and that's because the cheese auto has thrown it's first pistils today @3wks old. Seems a little early to me but I've never grown an auto before so possibly it's on track and will continue to stretch out a decent bit yet? I'm just glad she is not a he. It's also grown a fair amount in the last 24hrs going by yesterday's pic, I guess we'll just have to wait to see how it comes along.
20220828_094837.jpg
That 1 remaining back-up seedling also looks to have a pretty female pre-flower shape about her today, thankfully, considering the other 5 were males.

Thought I'd just mention my sunlight hours here too. So today lists 12.5hrs from sunrise to sunset. My first plants to get light starts from about 9am and the last ones from around 10am. Sunset has now increased by 1.5hrs as of last week as the sun doesn't disappear behind big pine trees around 4-4:30pm but rather sets behind the mountain range around 6pm and continues to do so up until around New Years. That gives me about 8-9hrs of direct sunlight a day until harvest, which seems to get the job done even with upto 80% of days having rain.

Here's a midday pic showing temp and humidity above and below the canopy taken today. Cheers.

Looking good Thai Fox, should be quite the mini (or maybe not so mini) forest once they start to flower. Do you by any chance have any more info on the strain your using please, just that it seems familiar but i can't pin point what type it is or were ive seen it before. Looks very nice, should be a good show.

Cheers mate, I can't wait to get the next phase underway Seeds are from any really decent buds I've come across that the hilltribe lads grow up in the mountains (Squirrel tail - หางกระรอก).

These ones were left to fend for themselves as an experiment just to see how they'd go first time around.
20210125_174636.jpg
They started out as a handful of seeds being thrown into the compost pile super late in the season (maybe end of August). They didn't get to completely finish out before foxtailing and starting to reveg but they came along alright without any maintenance or watering from seedling to veg and part way through budding, I only gave them a hand when the aphids & mites wouldn't let up. Still ended up with great smoko, just not enough of it. My guess is this time around being trained and maintained plus a long veg I should end up with a nice little haul if things stay on track and we make it to glass jars

They do look quite interesting. What kind of scents an taste do they tend to give you once completely ready to use ? Yes hopefully with the screen it should give you more than enough.

I don't quite fancy the airiness of them compared to the nice compact buds you get when growing indoors but I guess that's why they're able to handle the hot humid & rainy weather better without getting mold too easy etc. Taste I can't describe exactly sorry mate but it's nothing to write home about, much prefer more indoor/indica type flavour myself. The thing I mostly like though is the pain relief and the calming effect it has on me, it also gives me plenty of energy to do activities and stay focused on them as opposed to being stuck on the couch with a heavy body if smoking something that isn't a landrace strain, which is also nice if you're finished for the day but not from morning until night, that's where this sativa shines. My Thai mates all go to sleep after smoking it but that's not my style, I like to do things instead of sleeping. I feel other foreigners would be similar to myself and not want to go to sleep after smoking. Smell is unreal, something fruity, reminds me of smoking 20yrs ago haha

G'day, another daily update. Today it's to log that the last remaining back-up seedling that sprouted on the 19th of July has now show pistils today.
20220829_164819.jpg
It will be good to compare this girl which has only had 6wks veg to the other potted girl which has had 4mths of veg time. I'm interested to see how the flowering time is affected, strength of stems for supporting buds, protection against pets etc. as well as the quality of the finished product. I'd much prefer a 6wk veg in the future if they end up similar and harvest before chrissy. Here's the 6wk veg girl;

Can see the difference in maturity looking at the slender leaves, more fingers etc. The 4mth veg girl has had a hard life, she was originally just being used to attract the bugs from the scrog, plus she was growing with another plant in the same small pot for the first 6wks. Her stem is much skinnier than 90% of the plants in the scrog but I think she's going to be a cracker.

Just waiting on the West Coast & White Widow auto to show sex and we're away. Cheers.

G'day, another day another update. Today the West Coast OG has thrown some pistils @23days. Hopefully these autos will spread out a little over the coming weeks.
20220830_160747.jpg
Nothing else to report really. We've had some really hot days and a bit of rain at night lately, I gave them a feed with some Molasses blended up with an aloe leaf from the garden this morning, plus the scrog had another training session. Cheers.

G'day, last update for a couple weeks I'd say. The White Widow auto has now got pistils coming into day 14, it's bloody tiny but we won't give up hope for them yet.
20220831_135256.jpg
Here's that clone coming along nicely in it's final pot. The other one has just started growing some fresh leaves so it won't be far behind. Clones are from the 2 best plants in the scrog, with any luck I'll get a bit of smoke from them both.
20220831_123422.jpg
20220831_122555.jpg
And here's the entire shanty set-up I'm running.
20220831_123520.jpg
My guess is there's about 200 bright green/yellow tops in the scrog, should be a good haul if things continue to stay on track. I'm definitely keen to see them start budding though, that's for sure. Cheers.

Outdoors! for sure.

The Gorilla was done indoors, it's pretty decent. Cured for months.
Too easy, assuming you'll be starting next year? It really is quite the journey waiting for these sativas to fully grow, especially if you're an impatient bastard like me haha if you let them go and don't tie them down like some of my friends do they end up growing into massive trees.

Yeah, I have a bit of land and tons of time.
I want to see exactly how big they can get, seeing as I don't have to worry about the police.

Let's take this private.

G'day, Still waiting for the scrog to start budding. Any day now hopefully...Just finished a 2hr training session & ended up going through 200 mini cable ties, pretty much 1 per top so there's a few in there. Looks pretty healthy too, not a great deal of bugs at this stage. Can't wait to let em go, I'd say that's not too far away as they're just going through their final growth spurt now.
20220909_174454.jpg
Here's those couple clones, they have come along a treat, I'm just going to be giving them minor LST.
20220909_174243.jpg
The 3 Autos have started to branch out a bit and take a bit of shape to them, looks like they may end up being a half decent size the way they're going.

The weather has been pretty wild the last couple weeks around home, really hot for a week there and now the rains not stopping. With any luck the rain will ease up at the end of the month. They get wet during the storms but are quite protected from the strong winds and really heavy downpours.
Anyway, fingers crossed the next update will see the scrog with pistils coming out of all the tops. Cheers.
