Test Seeds

Ok so my og hot soil mix is just about finished incubating. The mix is hot. The N is about twice as high as it should be and the available P and K are moderate which is saying quite a lot since PK nutes are usually locked up in the organic material.

I want to run some dilutions of the soil mix by adding some of my lite soil mix in different ratios. I'd like to plant some seeds and see how they respond. But I'd like to plant some non mj seeds to avoid wasting seeds.

Anyone want to hazard a guess what kind of seeds/plant responds similarly to mj? I was thinking some sort of fast growing herb or maybe tomato seeds.

Ok so I did the test using basil.

I ran 4 mixes

1. Organic mix with high concentration of additives, somewhat similar recipe to subcools super soil
2. Half concentration of mix 1
3. Regular soil mix with very light organic additives
4. MG seedling starter

I basically got successful sprouts on all 4 mixes. I got a little burning on some of the sprouts from the mix 1 but other sprouts from mix 1 are doing just fine. the 50/50 mix resulted in more sprouts less stress.
The regular mix and the seedling starter were the best for getting the sprouts to pop.

Conclusion, plant your sprouts into a small plug of seedling starter or a regularly amended soil with low nutrients. Then when the sprout is about a week established put the plug it into the half and half mix. But make sure you Filled the bottom HALF of the pot with the hot mix.

Basically confirms that subcools directions of using the hot mix in the bottom half of the pot is prolly the best way to provide a long term supply of nutes without freaking out your plant.

Cool

And add some endomycorrhizal root inoculant to your soil mixes just before planting, it does boost nutrient delivery and increases root health.

hypotheticly; i do a dixie cup of roots organic, straight, that the seeds start in until the show their first set of leaves start to show then i move them to a keg cup of 1/2 my own mix (a heavily modified version of sub's mix) and 1/2 roots. then, when its time to move them to real pots and under real lights its the full dirt.

but my thing is, I don't start my mycorrhizal innoculant until the keg cup stage. Your saying you start right after germ?

I add Great White. IDK. It seems like such a small amount. I'll have that jar forever.
I did add, as per label directions, 16oz of solution. Rate; roughly 1/3 tsp/gal water, every third watering for four months. I guess it worked. stuff looked pretty good. I like subcools thing. ima use something very similar on my next grow i'm starting soon.
