Tall Plants Not Many Leaves

Ok so this is my first grow and it started off a little rough... I was using a shitty day spot lamp for the first 3-4 weeks of growth and now it is week 5 going on 6 and my plants are tall (about 8 -10 inches) and are not very full at all. I have them proped up and am hoping that now that i have gotten a good 400watt mh light that they will start flowering better. Its only day 3 of them being under the new light and i already see the leaves getting bigger and growing new ones, but im still worried about the height and that I need to keep them proped up. Should I cut the main steam to make them shorter and less top heavy or leave them as be... or is there anything anyone would sudgest?

the plant will only grow to the pot or container. Its a gallon of soil per foot i do believe. so it will only get so tall in what you have them in. innless you have them in a 3 gallon pot. A MH is a blue spectrum is for veg, this is where u will see leaf production. red spectrum is for flowering. it sounds like to me you are using a red spec, the plant will grow tall with fewer leafs. I am on my second batch. the first batch 10 plants 9 males it sucked. this go around I have a shit eaten grin. If you do cut the top it will fork, some times its good to expand.:bigjoint:

I feel you on the males I am just hoping I dont have too many. For chiseler my first grow the same thing happened to me and I kept them propped up and I was using just two 40w flourescent bulbs. I hope that with changing your lighting up but it might be too late for stopping their growth unless you top them. BTW I had males in their and since it was my first grow I had no idea to take them out so I lost all my bud... The only good thing is now I have about a 100 White widow seeds and about 50 ice

I can't tell what's what yet as far as male or female but I'll try cutting the main stem on one of them and see how it goes. It's about week 5 and they are now starting to produce good leafs due to the light change so would it be safe to say it's about tiike to start flowering stage in2 to 3 weeks? So far I can only see the beginings of the roots coming out of one plant the rest I still can't see them but these are also 4 inch pots in an 18g tub most pol seem to be using 2 inch ones.

I use 6 inch pots. I start them in a emily garden by hydrofarm. Once there foot tall and have a decent root system i transfer them to the 10 gallon resivor(home made). its a lot easer to transfer them with the six inch pots, i dont need a watering hole i just poor it in the corner of one of the pots. The only issue i have with the 10 gal is my plants are tall and still growing. My light is all the way up and their 12 inches a way from a 400 wat HPS. not good Heres some pics on my system. I am flowering know.

Wow thats great to hear because i am starting mine in emilys hydrofarm and plan on moving them to an 18gallon home made tub i plan to have holding 4 plants. How many aerators/pumps are your using, how are you preparing your water (2 5 gallon buckets?) are you using tap or store brought water, have you been doing 1/4 nutes all along, and are you flushing if so how often? I changed my water yesterday thinking i could bump it up to full nutes and of course i wake up to yellow leaves :( just ordered my ppm meter and think im going to just start fresh once it gets here and leave these plants out side to fend for them selfs. One last question... why not just leave it in the 10 gallon from start to finish?

I did not go with the 18 gal because the pots will be to close to gether if you try n use 4. Thats why i decided to use 10 gal with 2 pots. I use a duel pump as you can see in the pic. with a 6 inch stone, the pump has an adjustment. i run it on high. I use General Hydroponics FloraMicro & FloraBloom, veg i ran 10-5-5 flower 5-10-10. My tap water is 7.0-7.2 so i lower it to 6.5. I use clones at the moment so i run full strength nuts from the beginning every know and again i"ll give it strait water.

they only get put in the 10 gal to get ready to flower. I cut one two clones off each one of them and then I hit them with a 400watt cov bulb(MH) for a week mabe two, and then i flower.
The strained i have know takes 10 weeks to flower(sativa) that gives me 12 weeks to get the clones up and ready. If I had indica it would be 7-8 weeks flowering. Then i could harvest every 8 and 10th week. I would try in run 10 week cycles.

Can you explain what you mean by that? Im using the same with 3ml of each and 30 of FloraBlend. I started from seed and ran it in water for 4 weeks under the dayspot light then added the nutes after they where under the 400w hps for a few days. Only 1 of the plants have roots in the water (3 small ones). Some of them got burned so i diloted the tub by adding more water and putting the ph to around 5.5. Do you check the ppm and adjust accordingly? Whats your normal yield? Im thinking of starting over because now i have all of the correct equipment and am getting a feel for it. Or maybe i should just finish these first. So how can i tell visibly that it is time to start flowering eveyrone seems to be giving me a time line but i think they look pretty wimpy to start the flowering stage. The most that any of the plants have are 2 or 3 3 leaf branches... and the stem is starting to turn purpleish in color maybe its the nutes?

Ok the floragro i dont even use. I use 1 teaspoon of the florabloom and 2 of the floramicro per gallon, floramicro is all nitrogen. When i flower i revers that combo, so i use 10-5-5 and 5-10-10. look at your numbers. I started these with clones, cloning saves a lot of time..
I would run 1/3 the nutes for a while and see what happens. I havent started from seeds in hydro yet, I got my clones from a dirt plant. PPM? part per million, u are using co2? this is my second batch, my first one was fucked up. I did get to flower one, it turned out decent. I have had a hard journey my self. You just have to figure out what works. Each strained is different.
If you are thinking about starting over. i would try to get thoughs healthy enough to clone them its a lot faster. all u need is one to make it with 6 usable clones and you are on your way.

Put a small desk fan on them constantly and then you wont need to prop them up. Like in the wild where the wind blows plants around, in a room you will need to fan your plants to help strengthen the stems. You should not need to prop your plants unless their heads are heavy.

No PPM meter is for the water... how often are you changing your water? I have another tub that I am going to fill with tap water to give it a chance to settle then ph it and add the nutes then going to use a water pump to fill the tub the plants are growing in. Just not sure about how often I should be changing the water ive heard about every 2 weeks ive been doing every 1 week with emilys garden. An update from before... the plant that had a root in the water now has many more and seems to be doing well. None of the other plants have roots in water i supposed i should wait for that before transferring into the 18gallon tub.
