shopping for lights.. saw on craigslist a few MH lamps that look like street lights. i am wondering if i could use 400 watt MH lights that look like they were in a barn / factory / street. Says you they are for 120v or 480v. The ballast looks to be mounted on top of the hood.

Is this ok to use? they are so cheap i dont wanna pass these up if they are able to be used!

If it's a MH, MH it is. I got my hps' at a scratch n dent surplus store. Hubbell Parking lot fixture 400w for $70 bucks each. Same with my T5, corner was bent on the high bay frame, but had no effect on functionality, and $35 was a steal for a 4bulb T5! You need to have some/ someone's electrical knowledge to wire up ballasts if needed for correct voltage. You're going in the right direction, get a good ballast cheap, spend the money on good bulbs...

Yea, all those lights you see in the streets are usually MH or HPS. You can tell my the color they put out. Never seen a ballast mounted ontop of the hood, those things are fucking heavy. Unless you mean it's attached to the hood, like on the side. Post some pics bro.

BTW...

I dunno if I'd order off CL. Go into your local hydro store and you can usually get a better deal - especially if you haggle and shoot the shit with the workers.
