Strange Behavior from clones in bubblecloner

I am using a DIY bubble cloner with 2 10' airstones, sufficient air pump w/ adequate bubble coverage and neoprene EZ-Cloner pucks.

I've had to toss numerous clones because they appeared to be dead on top and the stems in the bubble chamber were soggy. Now for the strange thing... Upon pulling the appearantly dead clones out of the neoprene pucks I've notice a large number of them have had insane root growth ONLY on the area covered by the EZ-Clone puck. When I say insane root growth I mean that there is literally no visible green stem left, it is all little bright white healthy root sprouts.

What is going on here? For some reason the conditions in the EZClone puck where it is firmly pressed against the stem are highly optimal for rooting. Anyone have any idea why the roots are thriving there? Any how can a DIY cloner be made to leverage this? I was thinking some kind of simple perlite wick cloner with neoprene collars.
