Starting up- Seeds or clones?

I've been slowly collecting the stuff for an Aero grow in my bathtub for the last two months. I'll be using the bathtub as my ultimate leak/spill protection. I have a very limited budget every month. Next week I'll be buying my fans and filters and thought I'd better be ready to plant once the room is equipped.

I've been searching for seeds to start but, while Goggling for clones in Sacto, I found I can buy clones in various sizes for not much more than seed from the seed banks. A couple of places have 4-6" clones ($12) or 12-16" Teens ($18), or 16-24" Ready for flower ($24). The RFF's are in 1 gal soil so probably not for my Aero system. The Strains available are pretty varied and some good stuff. I was thinking some Tangi would be good.

I had been thinking about running some Autos to get some fast bud and found a local seed bank with some good strains but, does it make sense spend $29 for 3 seeds (8 week autos) or $54 for three (8-9 week photos) teens and just put the teens into flower? I'll be using a ~24"x30"x70" space so size is an issue that could be addressed by early flowering? I'll use the other half of the tub for my cloning setup so running photos will give me cloning cuttings.

The really cool thing is, as long as I just run 6 plants I'll be legal! Thank you Prop 64!

One of the nice things about the new Cali laws is most of the sites I've been researching have been Med sources and are "Real Companies" not "garage growers" Some of the collectives have been reported as "buggy' but not all.
The last time I grew I had spider mites had a heck of a time getting rid of them. I got the cuttings from a nephew who is growing outdoors.

One of the clone Co's will deliver to your door too! How cool is that?

Watch where and who you get your clones from. Inspect the surface of the leaves for small white spots or spores (mites / powdery mildew). Inspects the underside of the leaves for small white / black spots/dots (mites and eggs). Guys in Sac can be pretty shady, selling sick plants or renaming plants from bagseeds to anything that's popular at the time, just to make a quick buck. Bunch of unverifiable genetics and sick plants running wild in the north and east area. As someone pointed out, clones are the #1 way to introduce pests or viruses into your grow room. Create a space specifically for quarantine. I have extra Lemon Tree clones that I can give you if my buddy doesn't pick it up. I took cuttings for a buddy and he was supposed to pick it up but he's been lagging.

Tight budget small space autos have advantage of not needing seperate rooms or lights just pop a seed every so many weeks.

I too think clones can be risky, never know what you might get, bugs, mold, different strain then advertised, etc.

Thanks for the offer. It makes the Community of Canna to offer help and not ridicule, like some have done here. I'll PM you if I don't have this sorted out by Thursday.

I was thinking about ordering Tangie from Cloud City Clones. The only reason I dither is because every strain is listed as "Over 20% THC," "massive yield" & such hype, but little indication of flower times or heights, etc.

Clone Care in Roseville has a few other strains but their web site is confusing and they offer little info too, though they do list flowering times. They had Green Crack though, 8-9 weeks flowering time.

One of the Dispensaries I checked at said you had to order 100 cones at a time, which is pretty weird for a recreational grower.

No probs bro. Breeders will give you a ball park. It's never exact. Every growing condition and method is different. That's why many growers, including myself, likes to pheno hunt. I think the club that you were referring to is RCP?? Normally, if you want to pre-order, Dark Heart Nursery requires a minimum is 100 clones, for whatever reasons. Clubs really has no control over it. I believe Midnight Farm's policy with Zen Garden is 50 minimum. At least the last time I checked (many years ago). Otherwise, you'd have to walk in after clones drop, get in their long lines and hope to hell there's still any clone left over to purchase by the time it's gets to your turn. Also, after legalization in cali, the 30% tax drove prices way up. Prices of club clones in Sac and the Bay Area can vary anywhere from $17 - $25 per. That's pretty shitty. Many club's has stop selling clones. Yeah pm me bro. I also let my buddy know too, that of he don't act fast, his cuts will be gone.

I called a few places and Cloud City said that they would have clones March sixth, but their teens are in pelrlite which doesn't help and one told me they only sell minimum of 20 clones! Fortunately Zen Gardens has clones so I may go by and get some Gorilla Glue #4.

I for one am weird about clones. Love the shit out of mine! Scared to death of anybody elses. Ive grown alongside friends since high school and they trip out on me when they bring me clones. I quaruntine the clones for days. Then when im confident, i wash the soil completly off the plant, and i mean completly not even one spec of their dirt goes in my room. I tell them its because their dirt is inferior, and bummy. They laugh, I laugh, we drink beers. Ive also never had bugs, or disease. If time is no concern pop seeds. If you gotta have it now roll the dice.

I ordered six Auto seeds last night. They were on sale, I told myself.
I have a small construction to do before I get water and electrics in the same space. My Fan and Filter are being shipped and I was going to use a roll up shade and panda film to make a shade to keep the sky light in my bathroom from upsetting any photo period stuff. Need to design the support structure that doesn't make a mess of the sheet rock. and provides a ~7' shield to hide the mechanism.
Once I get the overhead done and everything hung, then I will add seeds, Clones, and water to the Bath tub.

It tried to Pm this but.... Noob!

Hi, This is GoatSoup, you offered me some clones, I think Lemon Top (?).
Anyway I ordered some (6) Auto seeds from Growers Choice Seed bank in Sacto, and thought I'd try those in my system, HOWEVER, to hedge my bet I thought one-two Clones or so might not hurt to get started. If they were photo period clones I could just veg them at 18/6 with the Autos and see which ran better, then switch to 12/12 and finish off the photos after picking the Autos.
I'm growing in a small space and was wondering about the Lemon Top, how big do they get? How long in flower for them?
I ran some Super Lemon Haze and it took like 15 weeks to finish, I don't need that to happen again.

Can you tell me about The Strain and your experience with it, Size, Branching, Time in flower?

Strain is called "Lemon Tree". It's a photoperiod hybrid - 50/50, Indica/Sativa, Lemon Skunk x Sour Diesel. This particular pheno takes on a more Indica structure and growth. You had to go 15 weeks because you grew haze. This strain typically finishes in 8 week. If you've ever grown Bubba Kush, these grow almost like it. If you train and top, they get extra compact and bushy. Very branchy and tight internodes. I like to top and train to get a wide "self-scrog" plant with an even canopy. Of course this is what you should expect from Lemon Tree (at least this pheno) but everbody's grow style and environment is different, therefore, the outcome may differ. The length of veg time and the size of your pot will determine the size of the plant. The good thing is, in flower, Lemon Tree don't stretch too much during flower so bud stacks tightly.

I am interested just sent you a "Conversation" as that was as close to a PM as I can find on this site???
I've got a few things in the grow room to do before I'll be ready to take run. Should be finished today.

Hey GoatSoup,

If you're a beginner I suggest you start with clones, as long as you buy it from a reputable source.
There're a lot of unstable strains out there and some that even turn hermie, usually it takes a bunch of seeds to find one good pheno.

For that reason, if you're limited to 6 plants, starting with clones would be a great solution.
Plus it will save you about 2-3 weeks !! ;-)

Well I got a clone from 6ixtynin9, (Thanks dude) my filter came in today, and the duct yesterday. So I am set, just need to rebuild my manifold and test my pump.
Man is that 4" filter heavy, good thing I put in the wire shelf, it can take the weight of the fan, filter, and the light no prob.

6ixtynin9 says the Lemon Tree is ~7-9 weeks from flip and grows bushy so I'll just run this clone for a couple of weeks in my clone tub and then worry about the seeds. The LT Clone is about 4" tall in coco and can live in the cloning hood for a couple of days/week while I finish up the mechanicals.

Yes it's not gonna do them much harm if they stay in it for a few day.
If you grow them in coco coir, you're going to need a fertiliser very specific. That's because coco lacks many of the micro nutrients naturally present in the soil.
