Starting a new garden (Help)

First post. Hooray.

I'm planning on starting up an indoor garden in my closet soon. I only want to grow 2 plants, 3 at the very most (this is all personal and I only use about 2 grams a week). I'm not a heavy smoker, but I don't like going to other guys for it because I'm lazy as all hell.

Basically, what should I get for these few plants in terms of lighting and fertilizer with a budget of about $300 to start?
 
Average size for a walk-in closet, I suppose. A 7-foot-tall 4x5 rectangle.

EDIT: That's in feet for all your british chaps out there. God, I hate the imperial system.
 
thats a nice size room... and nice hight too... the ting down their in my thing... and thing... and shit... has a link to HTG they have 400w HPS for 120 and 600W for 130...
they also have a pretty damn strong duct fan for like 35 bucks... both very good ivestments.

Without making any assumptions as to how you want to grow. I will just tell you what I did. Two plants is my limit as well. Do a search on Jethros grow box. There ya go. Make your own mods as necessary, but I suggest painting it white on the inside.
 
its all about the wattage you want to run, figure on avrage you will get 0.7 grams per watt... so if you have a 400watt bulb you will get about 300grams of erb, since its your first time... i would cut that down to about 150grams... see to me is all about verses space... if you used 1000watts you could get 1 to 2lbs... depending on your strain and skill level... 2lbs off 1kw is very good in my eyes with about 1 to 1.5lbs being avrage.... i would imagine in your closit you would want to go with a 400watter since you don;t smoke that much a figure a 400 watter will give you a 1/2lb give or take and that will have to last you untill you grow again... so, at least 2 - 3 months, for your next cycle to be up... so lets say thats 150 for the light, your gona need a fan to coll it, thats 100bux, so 250light and fan, then you need to make a hydro setup, that will be 50bux... then your going to need nutriants thats gona be 100bux for everything you need figure... like floral nova or soemthing simple like that... there cheap... and some calmag, yeah about 100 there.. and then you need to think about CO2.... depending on how you do the co2... can run you from 100 to 200 for a co2 setup... you can get a co2boost off of ebay or online, its like an organic method of producing co2 for smaller spaces lasts about 6 weeks and coasts about 100bux... soo.. i would say doing it my way your up to about 500 maybe 600$ i have a freind that did a 40watter setup not so long ago.. it coaster... about 700 give or take.... if you wanta do it and do it right, its gona take a lil money, but the good part is, once you make the investment then your golden....

Aarrghhh! Your wall of text almost killed me. But I think what you're saying is I could grow 2 or 3 plants with a 400 watt lamp, right? If so, is that a specific kind of lamp (e.g. Must be HPS) or could I use any kind? Fluorescent lights are cheaper and I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment.

Also, I can't remember if I should go with indica or sativa. Which is the one that grows short and bushy? I can never remember.

hps IS hands down THE BEST LIGHT FOR FLOWERING PLANTS, AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO ONLY use one light through the whole growth HPS is still the best
like I said previously that will cost you only 125 bucks from HYG. as apost to 400+ on other sites.
some others have cheep HPS lights for about the same price that are made wiwth crapy materials and are unsafe.
I would start growing with soil
get some 3 gallon pots. I think you can grow 5 large plants under this light. Im growing 12 small plants with no problems
soils is definetly easier, you dont even really need to use nutrients, but they do help.
but I think thats for another time
and indicas are the short bushy fast flowering plants, as apose to taller thiner, and long flowering sativa. both have their ups and downs, but indicas the way to go. IMO
sativas just dont yeild enough, and they take a really long time to flower. some as long as 12 weeks, as apos to the average 5-8 for indicas
