stacking rockwool/stonewool cubes

I grow plain and simple with rockwool/stonewool cubes. Usually 4x4x4.
I got an idea to stack 2 cubes on top of eachother.

Will this work? will this cause any problems? Is it a waste of a cube?

I figure it will just root through the top one into the bottom one and with more media below it should product more growth up top. true?

I use stacked blocks in flood and drain. I cut out a portion of 6x6 cube and place the 4x4 inside. I do this for 2 reasons:
1 Adds stability when flooding
2 Helps prevent tip rot by allowing the top of the cube to stay drier
 
I dont see why you would wanna stack your cubes bro. 6 x 6 cubes will hold all the roots you need to grow a huge plant.

I think by stacking your blocks you will cause things to be top heavy and it'll fall over one day and break

your girl you've been working soo hard on. And you will be spending twice the cash for no reason

i see the pros and cons you guys mentioned. I would like to point out the fact that 6' cubes are (at their CHEAPEST) 2.00 a pop, if that. I can get 4's for $1 each. I agree that the 6s are more than enough to grow a huge lady but you get more volume of grow media for your money stacking 2-4's. seen the 8x8x8? they are ridiculous!!! in price and size! Also another fact id like to mention is that the 6in cubes are actually only 6x6x4.
All i really wanted to know was if it was a bad idea, and since now i know others do it and it works ( better in some peoples opinions than others) ill continue to do it.

"ill continue to do it." So you are saying you have stacked your cubes before, and you were just testing us?

lol.

I would just tear the paper off 4 blocks and make a HUGE one with duct tape. lol
 
No, husalife, i have not stacked cubes before. but i am currently about 3 weeks into a grow where i stacked cubes for about half my babies. Just wanted to know if i should expect success or failure. Your idea to stick 4 cubes together to make one monster cube has got me thinking...........lol
 
@matticus408 - tip rot happens when the top of the medium (rock wool - dirt - whatever ) fails to dry out sufficiently. Where the stem leaves the medium, the stalk will stay too wet and rot. This is often seen in new seedlings, but can also happen to fully vegged plants, I had a friend loose a whole crop before he started stacking (which is where my knowledge of stacking comes from). :)
 
No, I`m not sure what I saw with my own eyes. I probably should have read a book instead, about what someone else saw or did. I do not post theory's - I only post about what I have personally seen or done. I never said that if you do not stack cubes, that you will get tip rot - I said that you could. Real life experience is a valuable tool - snarky comments are not :)

My SNARKY comment is: Grow a few plants......MORE than a few. But don't look at a buddies dumb ass project and try to pass it onto

another new comer. WHY DO YOU THINK MORE PEOPLE HAVEN'T REPLIED !!!!!

Stacking cubes is 1. a waste of money 2. gonna stay just as wet as ONE cube after flooding it

3. will end up falling the hell over and breaking your pretty ladies you have worked so hard to grow.

If and I mean IF stacking rock wool cubes to stop your "tip rot" was the "ANSWER" dont you think it would

be all over this site. Good looking out anyway Genisis I guess you are trying to help.

Matticus You will do what ever your brain tells you to do in the end, but why not start simple.

Then if you run into rot problems try "stacking". Rock wool cubes aren't so touchable and will

dent up and mash and be a mess if you have to handle them alot and shit. Yes they can be handled / picked up

gently but chunks fall off and ect...

If you are bound and determined to stack those cubes AT LEAST get 6 inch base cubes and 4 inch cubes to stack on top

So things aren't top heavy.

I have spoken with the Rock Wool GOD, He spoke these words lol :

"The point would be a larger root mass, but if you were stacking them,
a drip top-feed system would work the best.
Flooding might not be as effective since 90% of the medium is above the flood line.
He'd be better off using a low profile mat in the bottom of the res that the roots could grow into." -homebrewer-
 
If this is doable without stacking!!! Why Stack? I guess that's my point.

These beautiful plants were a creation of homebrewer. Aren't they gorgeous!!!!?

jesus husalife! my first grow i did with 5 gal buckets of dirt and i got plants about that big. are those 4x4x4 cubes you used in that pic?

whats your average yield off 1 4x4x4 cube husalife?
do you top or lst?

i noticed you keep them well braced with your string fencing. grand idea.
