Soil questions

Hey everyone, I picked up some gardening soil on accident so my question is, if I mix it with perlite and some peat moss can this soil be used in a container? and are they any soil texture tests.

Avoid peat moss. It makes the soil acidic and will cause you pH trouble when it breaks down and the buffers in your soil run out.

I dont know what "gardening soil" is though.

sound a bit like 'miracle goro' kinda soil, which i personally use. only issues with miracle gro , and i suppose this covers any nutrient rich soils, is the danger of nute burn, especially in very young plants. i start with a 'no nute' seedling and potting soil and after around two weeks when the plant is maybe 6 to 8 inches in height i put it in my next pots, my mix is always the same ; around 705% soil, 25% perlite and 5% vermiculite. i usually dont need to give them any food for around the next 3 to four weeks and when i do i start with 1/4 strength; for me that means 1ml per litre using biobizz grow nutrients, i will usually only veg for another weeks or so , by that time they will be around 30" in height, sumtimes only 24", then i flower them.

From what I have read Cannabis thrives and grows well in topsoil so I added some perlite and some compost/peat moss plus some potting mix, my main concern is if the soil in my container is to thick and holds to much water thus leading to the plants death.

when i mix my soil up i i dont compact it down too much, i try to leave it as airy as possible to allow for easy root growth but as time passes especially when u water it then the soil eventually compacts but if uv enuff perlite in it then this shouldnt become an issue. also the further on the stronger the roots anyway so they shouldnt have too many problems

That's why you add perlite. If it retains too much water you should have added more perlite. Also I think the peat moss is going to make your soil too acidic and will give you nutrient lock out. If your leaves get dry with brown spots, remember the pH!

very true i read most potting soil contain peat moss already so i just tried to brew up the closest thing to potting soil

most "garden soil" contains lots of clay and "dirt". It doesn't have much peat moss or any other organic matter. Mix some peat moss, sand and perlite with it and it could be used. But it doesn't have much organic matter in it, so it will need a lot more fertilizing than potting soil does. And the clay in the soil can still get compact. I would stick with potting soil, cheaper and easier in the long run.

I mixed it with organic potting mix, regular potting mix, compost/peat moss, and a bunch of perlite I hope it'll work or i'll be out two good seeds.

I made my own mix of soil as well. 5 parts potting soil, 5 parts MG Perlite and 2 parts composted manure the NPK ratio with the MG Perlite is 9/6/11. Is that to "hot" for a seedling?

as long as you mixed it good like this it should work out fine. you won't be out two good seeds. It may or may not be perfect, but it should work out fine.
