now i just need help finding the best option for the particular soil. any preferences?

a very good one is , :"PRO-MIX Potting & Seeding - Complete multi-mix Formula "

it has the good peat moss in it , perlite , limedstone .
no nutrients so you dont burn your newborns , and has good air ventilation and good water drainage :) .

From what I have seen from the test that is currently going on by a couple people Mg organic is the way to go.

To be honest if your a new grower I,d stay with premixed soil . Your not going to save money mixing your own right off the bat . It costs more to buy all the individual ingrediants for a mix . Then if its a problematic mix you created being unexperianced you won't know whats going on .

Staying with a known good soil will give you a chance to read your plants and learn what they like , then later down the road mix your own at that point you want have to ask for a mix you will already know what they want. I was gung ho on making my own soil at first , then I learned there are so many diff recipes everybody's is different .

Happy Frog with extra pearlite ,dolomite lime , and kelp meal has been working good for me .The only advantage to a mix is one like Subcools Supersoil mix because it's a water only mix if you can manage to get it right . He has never posted an accurate ratio for making small batches.

I completely agree with kingofqueen. Being a newbie to this, I've tried very hard to stick to the basics and the "common sense gardening" approach seems to work. If the soil's good for tomatoes, it's probably good for cannabis. In my case I've had great success with growing strawberries with one soil type, tomatoes with another, and found eventually that a mix of the two seems to be the best all-rounder. The ONLY problem I have with my soil is getting enough air to the roots - these are the sorts of problems you only really understand after a little experience. With regards micro and macro nutrients, my basic mixture seems to supply everything the plant needs and I supplement it with a teeny weeny bit of fertiliser when I feel she needs it. Worked so far!

thats why i say, pro-mix, holds water good, good air ventilation , and drains water good .

and after you got that soil, then you can check into what kind of fertilizer to get
