I've always used fox farm ocean Forrest and gotten good results but there are so many soils out there now it's making me want to try something else. Any suggestions?
Has anyone tried planting in straight casting? Or is that too hot?
I suggest you mix your own soil, you'll be much happier. You'll never get out of one bag what you can get out of several bags plus some amendments mixed together.
An easy mix to start with would be to grab a bale of Promix Bx, a bag or bale of coco peat (I like HydroFarm's Coco Planting Mix), a couple bags of that Fox Farm Ocean Forest, and a bag of worm castings.
As for amendments, at least throw some Myco product in there, doesn't really matter which one. I like Xtreme Gardening Mycos, it's awesome and cheap. Other than that it's up to you what you want to amend with. Some people like to use guanos and bone meal and stuff so that their soil doesn't require nutrients, just water or teas. I just amend with compost mostly for NPK.
Try this out, or at least some other kind of mix, you'll have fun with it. I started out with something like that last year and have already created a soil recipe that I've been happy with for months.
