So my psychiatrist said...

Last night I e-mailed my psychiatrist and finally told him that I had tried cannabis and that it worked wonderfully- the day after use it made me feel calm, I was able to concentrate on my work, all kinds of good stuff.

His response: "Cannabis does have a calming effect short-term. Unfortunately, its long-term effect is even worse motivation and cognitive slowing."

Anything to counter this claim? As in cited papers and the like?

just say something like

you opinion will be considered in the future, thank you

Eh I'd say I'm smarter now than I was in high school. I'm also equally as quick witted. I will say I can't memorize as much and with the same great speed I could in high school. However I still can memorize a shit ton of info (like 200 power point slides word for word). It just takes me longer to do it.

Not very much. The illegality of cannabis makes good studies hard to come by. Most of them are funded by the government and are pretty biased. (i.e.- the study that "proved" that pot kills brain cells. The test animals were literally suffocated with smoke, thus shutting down the brain, thus killing brain cells.)

LOL some interesting opinions. As a scientist I really wonder what the definitive answer to the question "What are the long term effects of cannabis use?".

I mean, if you smoke 24/7 and never really give your brain time to recharge in between hits I think you would come across as a bit slower than most. But really, there are baby boomers out there who have been smoking since the 60's constantly and they're not brain dead (I'll refrain from making a baby boomers joke).

The lack of quality studies is so fucking frustrating though.

I just can't deny to myself, however, the fact that pot has done so much for me in a positive manner.

Oh, and the other part of the e-mail I discussed with him the effects of my pain medication Tramadol and the lack of motivation from the depression (and pain meds - pain+depression = synergy in a bad way). So he doubled my methylphenidate prescription. Hell, what are the long term effects of methylphenidate? I know that when I'm flying on that stuff I feel more motivated and have less fatigue, but I also feel very emotionally rigid and snappy toward my wife. Not to mention the Tramadol and methylphenidate together affect my sex life. Yet, I take pot and *boom* no pain, I feel good about myself, the sex is awesome, and the next day I want to get all of my work done. Aaauugghh!! Either I'm going to jump off a building or move to Denver or California.

Stupid plant, hurry up and grow so I can have my medicine.

I sat through a fucking semester of psych, and learned more about it in 12 hours on LSD, without guidance, than in 150 hours of class, with the head honcho of our psych department. And worse yet, the teacher smokes weed and ridicules LSD, grouping it with cocaine, which she also hates... yet never saying shit about meth and crack. I'd say Freud should have prescribed meth instead of cocaine... Freud did coke. [anyways, regard or disregard what you will from previous post.]

That's too bad, I remember my one psych class during my undergrad where the professor teaching it also loved drugs. As a matter of fact he discussed his experiences with drugs and used them as examples in class.

I too would love to learn more about my brain from psychedelics. Someday.

What I would do if I were you was definitely pursue cannabis and see how it helps you. Cannabis is a weak and almost disappointing drug. I hate smoking weed, it doesn't bring greater understanding. It is best in combination with other drugs. I love weed but just I don't like my thoughts when I'm high. It's too tiring by the time you get anywhere near where your head wants to be, and all you're thinking about is food and retarded shit like mario brothers and having the same conversations over and over again... Maybe I just hate stoners. I don't even know yet anyways.

I really don't want to recommend psychedelics, but see how it goes with 2 days with no meds, then take a hit of acid or eat a few grams of shrooms. It may be able to sort you out.

EDIT: Only you know how your head is and your ability to use psychedelics/hallucinogens... But I would seriously consider it if you can carry on a conversation normally. Freud had something called 'free association' and if you look that up, that's what an acid trip is... taking all of your thoughts opinions memories and blending them all together and often finding sense and answers to questions you've never thought to ask. I think psychedelics can cure many a mental disease.

Excellent/thoughtful advice. I've done some reading on the subject and it makes me sad when I realize that drugs such as LSD are banned when there is solid evidence to suggest that they may be extremely effective in the treatment of certain mental diseases.

When will science dictate politics and not the other way around?

So the shrink warns of the long term effects of cannabis, then prescribes you methylphenidate.
this world is fucked

i take it from your post that you are like me, stuck in a state that does not recognize the many medicinal benefits of cannabis... hence his reaction. hell, my use was part of my diagnosis.... evidently pot makes you depressed??:?... or at least "amotivational".... its like i told my doctor recently, sure pot does have a tendency to make one a bit lazier than normal, but it surely beats the alternative.... when you're so down that you cant get out of bed, something that allows you to be happy, stomach some food, and play with your kids for an hour is a wonderful improvement. Every medicine has its side effects and downsides, but pot seems to have the least ;-)

He had already prescribed me it earlier this year. After my conversation with him about fatigue and motivation (and cannabis), he doubled my dosage- I can take upwards of 60 mg/day now.

there have been non governmental studies done on weed and it only temporarily puts your cells to sleep not kills them unless you are a lab rat. lol

Chemically based medications will damage your brain, liver, kidneys, prostate, etc. pretty much all of your organs.

if you take too much you WILL die. with pot there is no such evidence that you can OD on it, not one truthful case. unfortunately the medical colleges are funded by pharmaceutical money and therefore are only taught about pharmaceutical medicine. so the dr's just don't have the knowledge about natural remedies.

sorry, just a little rant and rave. lol hope this helps.

Shrinks are salesmen for multi billion dollar drug dealers.
weed is competition.
