Smoking Magnetic Ballast

Hello, today I bought a new HPS 600W grow light kit. The problem is with the magnetic ballast when I plugged the lamp it started smoking and I immediately unplugged it.
Is it normal to smoke when first started?

No its not, did you happen to see where it was smoking from and do you know if the male female connectors were plugged in properly.

Only time ive had a near miss in the grow room was when I had a male female not plugged in properly and that causes arcing which makes crazy heat and melts the plastic and smokes.

No, smoking lights are never good. Is the ballast smoking or the bulb? If it's the bulb, then did you make sure not to handle it with your bare hands? Inf not, then the oil from your hands is on the glass and is burning off.

like any appliance it has a little bit smoke in it and once you release it is toast
Seriously though i've bought dozens of ballast and if one smokes i would return it

It sounds very unsafe i would not plug it back in if i were you. It could cause a fire.

yeah that's not safe at all. it could cause a fire and set your house on fire. I would send it back from where you got it from and buy a digital ballast. they are much safer and they don't get hot either
