small winter grow

so im an outdoor grower. i want to do small indoor grow this winter. im just wondering if anyone has grown in anything besides soil. im not trying to get into hydro just thinking about other grow methods possibly sand? or something along those lines just want to try something different.

I was wondering if you could put a plant in a box full of water and give it enough air to survive, get a uv light (one of the ones they have for fish tanks that are attached to a pump) to keep algee at bay.

people have told me that cfl grows are better using coco coir ...http://www.growweedeasy.com/easiest-grow-method-cfl-coco-coir check that out im using this guide as well.

well i remember in high school we grew peas in these gel cubes. im trying to find out how to get a hold of some. its pretty cool you can see the roots and everything and the plants did really well. mine was about 3 feet tall by the end of the assignment.
