Small scale breeding

Hey guys, one of the biggest things that keeps me interested in growing cannabis is breeding. I'm by no means an expert grower, shit I'm not even a really good grower yet (don't have much under my belt yet).

I've read through a few chapters of different books about breeding and I just wanted to know from all of your standpoints is it possible to do some good breeding on a small scale? I don't have the means or space to grow out hundreds of plants when I'm determining homozygous/heterozygous traits, and selective breeding.

What do you guys think is the minimum number of plants each go 'round?

Just to give you an idea of what my ultimate goals are... I'd like to start out doing simple hybrids, then maybe nailing one down to get a stable hybrid that I can keep growing over the years (as well as give seeds away to fellow breeders, for free or cheap, I'm not in this for the money). Eventually I want to create strains, maybe work on a nice IBL.

Sorry if I'm all over the place, I'm still learning about breeding.

yeah you can sure why not it's not really very difficult, people will make you think it is but it's not, but trying to establish a seed bank and sell them would be. But you will be more than happy people have been breeding plants for a long time and most were just simple farmers before genetic engineering came along, it's not that hard but not everything will turn out much better than what you started with. You think that many landrace were bred for centuries in a certain place for a certain characteristic by the local farmers who were not biologist did just fine, but it took centuries ;)

Yes you can no problem.

I have just started to build my own personal seed bank. I breed auto flower seeds. I have Blue Streak down pat(should have over 100 seeds after this grow) and am working on Purple Jems(I have 2 males I am harvesting pollen from right now). After I get the pollen from them I will grow out 3 or 4 lady's, and make me some seeds. Next I will be adding MiniThunderfuck, Short Term Amnesia, and Lowryder2. I have the beans on order. When I have made 100+ seeds from all the strains I want to work with. I will start crossing and seeing what cool stuff I can come up with. Maybe try and make my own strain.

Now keep in mind I am doing this in a 2' X 3' closet. It may take me years to get there. But I'm havein a blast in the mean time and the bud is very smokeable after I pop the seeds out of it. I just got a new dugout with a glass bat. I will chop it nice and fine and dump it in there for when the need arises.

This might help

I'm gonna give small scale breeding a shot pretty soon. After this run I'll be setting up a room specifically for males and harvesting pollen. Think of some of the sick ass hybrids you can make man. All depends on your personal preference.

After years of growing in Florida from a small gene pool, I have moved to Central American mountains and am starting a new little program myself. I started with 9 strains, 5 sativas, 3 hybrid sativa dom and an idica. This on a small scale will probably never see the finish but with being able to pollinate individual branches of females you can greatly reduce the time and the number of crosses at any given time.
Doing this on a small scale usually no more than 10 or 12 small plants growing and flowering at any one time. Doing this I start with say 6 or 8 seeds per cycle. From seed I allow the plant to grow naturally to see the structure of the plant for both male and female. Having such a small grow sometimes you don't get the best choice for the plants that you want but that is where cloning comes in. You find a male that would work great with a female you have. This cycle I grew 4 plants from last year's cross. I plants didn't all mature at the same time for the cross I was looking for but with using clones I had a cycle come through at the right time. I usually run a cycle of the seeds and then take two clones from the female and male for the plants that I want to cross. This gives me 3 females which are the same so I can stagger out the smoke over the months, also with the clones allowing the to only grow up to 14 to 16 inches before you flower you can turn over a few generations of seeds a year.
Just something to think about when you trying to start your set up. I always have found setting up your goal and timetable will keep you happy and not having to retain males longer than you have to.
Good Luck and Have Fun it has addicted me

Nice I've been dabbling the idea around myself, been reading up on it around RIU and a couple books also.. Small scale can be done just takes longer is all :weed:
