Simple Questions from a Newbie

Hey, I've never grown before and I just germinated and planted a seed a couple days ago. My growing space is very limited (Height: 2' 5") and I'm growing mostly out of interest. I have a couple questions.

Currently I have a 13w Helical CFL bulb about 2 inches away from my seedling. When should I get more light, and how much more light would I need?

I'm pretty set on using CFL's, I just need to know how many lumens I would need for this one plant.

Also, how often should I water and how much light should my plant get? (At the different stages of growth.)

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to RIU. CFLs don't throw light very far so the bulbs must be maintained very close to the plant. Due to this you don't want to veg your plants very long which limits yields to 1-2 oz a plant. I would recommend you LST and scrog very early on and use ~200w - 10 23w bulbs would work or two 64w and 4 23w.

Slowly step up the number of bulbs you are using as the plant gets bigger. One or two should be fine for the first week and then start stepping it up from there.

I've noticed my plant has a purple stem, is this a problem at this stage? I'm using Miracle Grow Moisture Control Soil, does this mean I wont need to water as much? I watered a couple days ago and it still seems to be pretty moist.

I'm still using only one 13-watt cool white CFL on a 18-6 cycle, will probably step up the bulbs soon. I bought a three-pack of 26-watt Soft White CFLs, 1750 lumens and 2700k rating, but I read that these are better for flowering. Should I buy some more cool white bulbs, or would using the soft white bulbs be okay?

Growing more and more every day, just thought I'd bump. I pretty much figured that 6500k Daylight/Cool White bulbs are better for vegging. But I still don't know about the watering and purple stem. The span of the two leaves is almost as wide as the cup its in.

I was wondering about CFL light setups, basically all I have available is a bunch of desk lamps, does anyone know where I can get those hanging sockets that you just plug into an outlet, or those socket splitters? I don't really want to order anything online and I've looked at the Home Depot website but can't seem to find them. I basically have little to no money so I'm getting whatever's the cheapest.
